Hello,
I have a very peculiar problem - no sound from in certain situations.

No sound:
- from loudspeakers, while watching any movies or playing any songs
- from the built-in earpiece/speaker when calling somebody (I cannot hear anyone when using the phone normally, I always have to grab headset or turn the loudspeaker on)

I have sound:
- from loudspeakers when eg playing ringtone (eg somebody calling me)
- from loudspeakers when, during the call, I put the call on loudspeaker
- through earphones probably in all cases (though the quality has recently been questionable - this might be an earphones issue, though)

My Bluetooth is off.

Thus, currently, I am unable to talk normally (only via headset) nor watch movies without headphones.

All help would be highly appreciated! Is it a software issue which I could fix myself, or a hardware issue? I run 8.1 Android on Pixel XL (but the problem started under 8.0 already).

Thank you very much in advance.

Are all three of your sound settings enabled and high enough?

Sure sounds like the phone "thinks" there are headphones plugged in. That would explain no media or phone call sounds, and I believe when there are headphones plugged in the phone itself actually rings (rather than just through the headset) which is why you still hear that. And though I've never tried it, I assume if you had a headset plugged in, turning on the speakerphone during a call would override the headset and the call audio would come through the speaker.

Assuming you've rebooted the phone, I'm going to speculate it's most likely a hardware issue. I wonder if something is stuck in the headphone port causing it to think there are headphones plugged in? That might also explain the drop in headphone quality you mentioned.

You are spot on! I have run an app showing whether the headphones are plugged in or not, and it showed indeed that they are.

The question then is - what can I do? I have tried blowing compressed air, it didn't help much. I could probably go to a repair shop asking them to open the phone and clean up the port, but maybe there is something else I could do myself?

Hmm, I would think compressed air would be the best and "safest" thing to try... But if that didn't work I suppose you could try carefully poking around in there with a toothpick or something small, in case something is actually lodged in there. But unfortunately it could also be that something is physically broken in the port, although the fact that the port itself still works gives me a little hope.

Here's a thread I had going on my previous phone, an LG G6 with a bad headphone jack, more of a "loose connection" issue. Someone chimed in middle of the first page about prying the little spring out to give it a better connection, which I tried with my 2nd faulty G6 but didn't have much luck. I don't think that's your exact issue anyways.

Lastly, you could try looking around at https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Google_Pixel_XL It is a good resource for teardown and repair information on all types of phones, as well as a source for tools and replacement parts. At a quick glance I don't see much on the headphone jack, but may be worth a closer look. Good luck.
