No Spin Please

When it comes to judgments and opinion forming I always consider all the information I can gather. For example, if you discuss any given political topic with me you might think I'm liberal, but switch topics and now I might sound conservative. Depends on the topic. I pride myself on being an independent thinker.

I see these hot topics here on Android Central and after reading the article I get fired up. AC readers post comments and vent about how terrible competitors or competing products are. But I'm always curious about the other side.

I took a look at imore.com (a Mobile Nations site) and it's like the anti-Android. You can see phone drop tests that show the iPhone to be superior in build quality, and articles about Apple defending themselves against patent lawsuits from Samsung and Motorola.

Wait.. what? I read all the time about Samsung and HTC defending themselves against Apple lawsuits. I've watched drop test videos that show how fragile the iPhone is.

Comparing the two sites I feel like I'm being played. What's the truth? Like most subjects it's probably somewhere in the middle.

So, to the writers of Android Central I have a request: No spin please. Tell it like it is or don't tell it at all.

Heh. I hear ya, but this ain't politics. Apple wants to sell phones. It wants to sell more than Samsung. (And everybody.) And if it thinks someone's infringing on its patents -- or more to the point, could be infringing on its patents, it's going to do everything it can to stop those devices from being sold.

And you know what? That's what it should do. I don't like it. I think it sucks. It's a dick move. But from a business standpoint, I get it.

How's that for no spin?

Well if you come to a site named Android Central I would expect a lot of posts about people hating other platforms and products that is more or less a given.

When it comes to spin and being played by the AC crew I think you're way off base. There are a lot of pro android sites out there and when it comes to reviews and news this is the one I prefer by a very large margin.

I see what you are saying, yet I want to disagree a little. Heh. I think grassroots sentiment and blog buzz actually mean something. It may not - I'm no financial analyst. But it just seems like Apple is getting a LOT of bad publicity with the patent trials.

*Edit* Just thought of a demonstrative example. Apples behavior reminds me a lot of Microsoft. They kept things on lockdown with Windows, and they raked in money hand over fist in the 90s and early 00s. But their heavy handed tactics eventually came back to hurt them. Because when Google went to develop a mobile OS, they built it on top of Linux. Now Microsoft desperately wanted to break into that market, but they couldn't. WP7 was a flop.

Apple can try to monopolize the market, and it may bring short term victories, but in the long run they should really be focusing on other things.

Just my opinion! ;)

Having moved from iWorld to Android, I can say that Apple's business practices have become a real turn-off. What brought me to Apple was that I couldn't (at the time) buy a phone with the innovation and capabilities that the iPhone had and I got an iPad because I fell in love with the idea of a 'big' iPhone for all the non-phone stuff I did on the iPhone.

What brought me to Android is the fact that IMO, Apple stopped innovating in the ways that I felt were important. It seemed like they were designing for them and the only way I could get features for me was to jailbreak, sideloading customizations, etc.

Android lets me carry around devices for me, not a showcase for Apple. Android seems to be constantly innovating in capabilities, customability (yes, that is a word :p). Frankly, my eyes aren't good enough to see the awesomeness of Retina and my brain give a shrug and a yawn. Do my games look fantastic? are my movies sharp and clear? can I see every pore on that baby's butt? Yes? Then the screen is good enough for me.

If you want to get me excited about my hardware, talk to me about the various keyboards, my homescreen setup vs yours, or FREAKING INTEGRATED TURN BY TURN NAVIGATION, DAMMIT! Talk to me about how when I got a new phone I didn't have to worry about backed up contacts or email cause Google had it all waiting for me....okay, now I'm just expressing my Android love...

I rarely hear much Apple bashing and "Android is superior" just because comments anymore. In my mind, at least for now, Android is ahead, but you never know what tomorrow brings. I don't think AC offers up the point that Android is 'better' than Apple, IMO, all they have to do is point out the differences and you'll go with what you think is best.

The only thing that I believe droidees can bash Apple on is the lawsuits which seem to me are just sour grapes now, and their lawsuit tactics are just proving out how ridiculous some of the patent laws are.
(end rant)

Heh heh, thanks for the reply Phil. I'm not saying AC is bad about this, but when you look at the two sites side-by-side you get the distinct feeling that SOMEONE is blowing smoke. So, my request really is just that, a request to tell it like it is without regard to hurting the fanboys' feelings.

This site gets bookmarked because the editorial staff here has a way of writing articles that don't sound overly "fanboyish".

Correct. The "editorial staff" here are real good, "overly" being the operative word, and it is refreshing....

You claim to be an independent thinker, so think independently. Don't ask anyone to filter for you. ...to perform the "smell test" for you. You've got a nose. Use it. Find your own answers.

Do a websearch on lawsuits involving Apple. Does it appear Apple sues more than gets sued? There's your answer.

How about that drop test? Does it make any sense to you an all glass and aluminum phone will survive better than ABS plastic? If you say "yes", I'll be right over to pee on your leg and swear it's just rain.

I don't know why anyone hates anyone. Why people call others name for the type of product they use. In the mobile OS world I use both, android & iOS. To get past any non-sense from blogs I use the products myself & know how they really work. Plus I go to many different sources, not just one, & aggregate what is consistent information & what is fluff.

I agree, calling names and running people down for what phone they use shows nothing but ignorance, being totally out of touch with reality and not knowing what is truly important.

I don't care what kind of phone you use, that's not how I judge someone's worth or intelligence. Sent using tapatalk 2.
