No Text Notifications

Hey gang,
Recently got the new V40. I like this phone, but I've noticed that I do not get a notification when I get a new text message. I can specifically go to the text message app and it will show them there as unread. But I get no notification when they arrive. Has anyone experienced this? Have you found a fix? I really need to get this fixed, it's a huge issue because my boss and I text a lot about work and now I'm not "seeing" when he sends me a text.

Welcome to Android Central! Just to be sure -- you've gone to the Messaging app's notification settings to make sure it's set properly? Are you using the stock messaging app, or a 3rd party one like Facebook Messenger?

Yup, that was the first thing I checked. I even tried turning off notifications in the app settings, rebooting, then turning them back on.

Stock messaging app. I really don't want to install a messaging app when the phone comes with one already.

Sorry for another basic question, but the Ringtone/Notification volume slider is also turned up, right? Sometimes people aren't aware that the Media and Alarm volume sliders are separate from Ringtones/Notifications.

Hmm....not sure I'm following here. My ringtone volume is always off because I work in an office environment. But what I'm talking about here is the notification icon in the notification bar at the top of the screen and the notification icon that would be on the "always on display" screen as well. I get these for all other apps, like Facebook, Twitter, Outlook, etc. But the icon for text messages do not show up, regardless of any ringtone volume level setting.

Oops! I had it in my mind that the notification wasn't triggering a tone, but was still visible in the status bar. Sorry! Let me think about this a little more.

Any options in the Do Not Disturb settings turned on? Those settings are granular enough to turn off only notifications for Messaging.

No, I have the "Do Not Disturb" turned off. I just turn the ringer volume all the way down instead.

You know, it's interesting. Ever since I started this thread I've noticed that my message notifications seem to be appearing suddenly. It's almost like my phone knew I was looking for an answer and went "Oh crap, he's on to us! Act normal, act normal!"

LOL! That always seems to happen to me when I call tech support about something as well.

Were you having this issue before, even when the phone screen was on and you were actively using it? Did it seem to happen mostly when the messaging app was open, but you were in a different thread?

I had been having this issue ever since I got the phone. I have had it for about 3 weeks now. It would happen whether I was in the app or not. Like, for instance, my boss sent me a text last night around 9pm. I didn't see a text notification so I never noticed that he texted me. So I put the phone on the charger and went to bed around 10pm. When I got to work this morning he said "Did you not see my text?" Uhh....no.

Hmm, that's obviously a significant problem. Although I realize you'd rather use the stock app, it's worth testing another app like Google's Messages app. If that works, then I'm leaning towards a bug with the stock app.

I think Google's own Messages app does a fine job. Textra is also widely praised.

Could have accidentally disabled notifications for that app. I've almost done it when handling my phone with the screen on by an inadvertent long touch of a notification, which expands it and gives you the option of disabling them. Check the notification settings phone settings (as opposed to app settings).

The stock app shouldnt be behaving that way. I'm wondering if another installed app might be causing a conflict. You could try running the device in safe mode which will disable 3rd party apps and see if it still exhibits the same behavior.

I've had some others suggest that too.

After searching the web for months I have found someone with the exact same issue as me. Like you I've verified notification settings are correct. Tried various resets. I have even just received a replacement phone from AT&T only to discover that it has the exact same issue as my first lg v40 which I purchased at the beginning of January. So I may have a little nore insight into the issue. Hopefully I explain this well. On an lg v40 when you receive a text and your using the phone it pops up on screen with the message and a reply box. In the top right of this box is a "x" to close the notification. What is supposed to happen when you hit the "x" is it closes and clears the notification from the pop up, notification bar, and shows it read in the stock messaging app. When it does this properly I always get the next text from that person. Sometimes when you hit the "x" the pop up goes away but thr unread notification remains in app and it stays on notification bar. Even upon clearing these manually I fail to receive the next text notification from that person. As you said it is in app but you never receive a notification.
