When I'm not around wifi and try to get online, phone won't use cellular unless I manually turn off WiFi. Can I set up the phone to use cellular automatically whenever wifi isn't available?

It should work that way automatically. Need more info. Phone model? Rooted? Stock ROM? Android will automatically cut off data and switch to wifi if you are near a "remembered" wifi point, ie; one you have previously connected to.

What are your settings under wifi/advanced? I have network notification unchecked, keep wifi on during sleep (always) wifi frequency band (auto) and everything else checked.

If its happening when your trying to download things then you need to change your download preferences from wifi only.

That is a preference in certain apps. It is not a global on/off switch and would not impact navigation & email.

exactly..OP said it happened while driving and downloading gmail & gmaps...
