Non Samsung apps on new watch

Just picked up a new Galaxy watch and have yet to set it up. Question is... Am I bound to all Samsung stock apps on my phone for full functionality? I need to be able to compose, respond, read... etc. on both the phone and the watch sans constant reminders that I am not using stock apps. Will outlook work?

Just checking to see if anything has changed since the S3.
