Non Samsung Phone with Gear S2

So I am neither a "smartwatch guy" or a Samsung guy.... For some reason I really wanted this new Gear S2. I have a HTC One M8 and when using the Gear S2 with it, I am either missing something very simple, or the text messages portion is really lacking with non-samsung phones. I get notifications for text, but can not find the little yellow "messages" icon I see in all the pictures / videos online of the apps. Once I see the text... its gone for good. Cant find a list or anything of old / previous texts.
Anyone have any insight?
If its because I have a non-samsung phone.... anyone want to buy a Gear S2 worrn for about 45 minutes on my couch?

What app do you use for SMS? I'm pretty sure what you're looking for only applies if you're using the TouchWiz messaging app on a Galaxy device.

That said, the S2 seems to work well with Hangouts. You can read, quick reply and initiate SMS just fine through the watch
