Ok so I've followed the sticky on this forum where it has a very clear video demonstrating how to root the nexus 7. Everything went perfect and I am now rooted and I can gain acces to recovery mode when I like.

The question I have is how do I now install custom roms on to my nexus 7? I've been browsing the xda forums where they have custom kernels like the elite kernel and others and I was wondering how do i install them on to my nexus 7? The reason for this question Is because all the custom roms I have seen mention all the amazing features they provide and they also include download links but where do I place these files and how do I install them to my nexus 7. I am not computer illiterate it's just my first time rooting a andriod device and need some help will be really greatfull if anyone can point me to the right direction for help. Thanks a lot.

I have a guide--it's called Release the Kraken. Read that :).

No problem! If you have further questions, ask there because I'll know a bit quicker :).

I have found that it's easier for me to d/l the zip files to my N7 rather than my PC. Then I use ROM Manager to boot to CWM and flash the ROM and gapps. And you don't need to be plugged in to a USB to do this. I have downloaded zips and installed them sitting in the airport.:D

If you haven't chosen a Rom, allow me to suggest CodeNameAndroid. IMHO, its the smoothest thing going right now and I have tried many!

On the N7 I would agree that it is easier to download files to the N7. When it comes to my phone its the opposite, I would rather DL it to the PC, check MD5 and then flash.

As far as the ROM goes, I would recommend either AOKP or CM10. Codename is basically CM10 with his tweaks to it. Besides, there is a history with CNA which I won't go into but if you want a purist experience, go with CM10 or AOKP.

Yup; you only need to be "plugged in" if you're going into recovery manually through the bootloader.

As for roms, I echo what creccaj said 100%.
