Not all photos appear in DCIM folder

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I haven't found it
I'm having issues with my Motorola Droid Turbo. When I look through photos on the phone, I see 493 items. I want to move most of these from the phone to clear up space. When I connect the phone to a computer and look in the DCIM/Camera folder, I only get 63 items. Even stranger, it's not only the recent photos that show up. There are some from 2016 and some from this year. Just a bunch missing in between.

Welcome to Android Central! How are you looking at the photos on the phone -- using the Gallery app, or a file manager app? If you're using a file manager app, are a lot of the items folders rather than actual images?
