Not enough storage space

Hi Guys,

I need some help please. I just got a S10 with 128gb last week.

I have a new microsd card 128gb as well and I already formatted the SD card through the new phone.

I would like to transfer most of the apps to the memory card instead of using the internal storage such amazon and etc.

When I started picking the apps that could be change the memory type during the transferring, there was a message showing "NOT ENOUGH STORAGE SPACE". In other words, that's mean I had insufficient memory in the memory card.

I checked the storage status of the SD, it indicated there were lots of memory.

Does anyone know how to fix the problem? I have a S7 and I have no problem transferring the apps to the memory card.

Thanks.

Re: Insufficient Storage Memory

Are you sure that your card is legit? Most fakes exhibit that type of behavior.

Re: Insufficient Storage Memory

First question is where did you get the SD card? There are tons of them being sold as large storage that are really tiny storage units that have had their storage status changed to make them appear to be something they aren't and then are sold for a healthy profit. This is actually really common on Amazon third party units and is the norm for memory bought from Ebay sellers.

And this is why I won't buy SD cards on sites such as Amazon or eBay.

Re: Insufficient Storage Memory

My SD card is not fake. I got it from Bestbuy. It is a Lexar 633X 128GB memory card.

My old samsung S7 was using the same SD and never had a problem.

Re: Insufficient Storage Memory

May be something to do with S10 running One UI with Android 9 and your S7 still on older software? Just a guess, may be someone else can confirm trying to move apps to SD card and see if they have the problem as well. Personally don't use SD cards so can't test that.

So its the same memory which you use on your S7 and now its in the S10 but when moving stuff it says insufficient memory?

Try doing a stress test.

No, it is the same brand of new memory card. My old card is still in my old phone.

Have you tried the old microsd in the s10?
It it works fine then its either the new microsd is faulty or counterfeit...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the S10 doesn't support adaptable storage as far as know. Certain apps may be moved if the developer allows it.

Re: Insufficient Storage Memory

The others may be right that the card is suspect to be fake or defective, but something else needs to be pointed out:

I would like to transfer most of the apps to the memory card instead of using the internal storage such amazon and etc.

Are you saying you were trying to transfer the apps directly from phone to phone and dirty to the SD card? If so, that isn't going to work anyway. You need to re-download apps from the Play store and go through the regular installation process. This will install them to internal storage, which is a default you can't change and applies to app updates as well. You may (emphasis on MAY) have the option to move them to the SD card after installing/updating, but keep in mind it does not transfer the entire app. How much is moved depends on what the developer programmed it to move. Many apps don't allow it at all.

It's also simply not recommended to install apps to the SD card like that. Apps are constantly writing data to storage for various reasons. Internal storage chips are designed to handle this. SD cards are not designed for this amount of writing and will get corrupted relatively soon. You're better off leaving apps on the internal storage, and save the SD card for stand alone files like media and documents.

When I got my new S10, I just transferred all the apps and settings to the new phone through the wireless.

In my S7, the apps can have the options to change the storage option from internal storage to the SD card and this is the same as S10.

When I went through the app storage setting, there were some apps that could change the setting such as Amazon, microsoft word, excel and etc. I have no problem moving the storage in my S7.

If you are saying, for example, if I tried to change the Microsoft excel storage to the SD and the screen popped up the message "NOT ENOUGH STORAGE SPACE", and all I have to do is delete the app of the excel and re-install it?

I double checked my SD card last night and I was pretty sure there was no problem of the SD card that I got.

Maybe, you are right, I should only the SD card for saving all my documents, music and photos only.

When you wirelessly transferred, do you mean it sent the apps direct to the new phone, or was it just instructing the new phone on which apps to download from Play? I know some backup programs can backup your apps that are then sent as .apk to be installed onto the new phone, but that takes a few extra steps.

Reinstalling an app shouldn't affect the storage full issue on the card. Have you tried filling the card with other files to see if you get the same error?

If I remember correctly, the new S10 setup asked to sign in the google account, then all my apps were transferred from my S7 thru the wireless.

I copied all my file documents such as music, photos to the portable hard drive and paste them to the S10 from my laptop. All the files were save to the sd card inside the S10.

That sounds like it re-downloaded them from Play, which is an option during the setup process and doesn't require transferring anything from the old phone.

It's also possible that you utilized SmartSwitch. I found it easier to use SS than to try and figure out which ones I wanted from the Play Store.

You mean that little device (dongle) that came with the box right?

I tried it before, it just mirrored my old setup of the apps from my old S7 to S10.

Some of the new apps could not be displayed using this dongle in the new S10.

I tried moving some of the apps to the new memory card (using the dongle method), some apps were okay to transfer but some were still displayed "NOT ENOUGH STORAGE SPACE". It is strange.

Like @Mooncatt said, SD cards have a slower performance then the internal storage when it comes to read/write. Also, the durability of an SD card isn't anywhere near the internal storage on the phone.

I am inclined to think the card may be defective. It can happen. I would insert the card into a Windows PC so that the capacity can be double checked.

Out of curiosity, why so much storage?

I think I will double check the SD card again and see whether it is defective.

I need a larger size of SD card because I need the phone to take pictures and videos.

I am not sure what is the maximum size of memory card that this S10 can take?

128GB is good enough for me to take lot of pictures when I am going on vacation.
