Not getting email notifications

I am not getting email notifications. Not with AquaMail (preferred) and not with K9. I have messed with settings until I am blue in the face. Often I will get it to work once but then the next time it doesn't. Notifications from other types of apps work. It seems to be just the email ones. What am I doing wrong? What are some of the things I should be checking?

Update: I just noticed when I open up AquaMail that it doesn't automatically sync. I have to do a manual sync. When I did the manual sync I immediately got the notification in the notification bar AND my Pebble watch also received the notification. It appears to be a sync problem. What should I be set one?

Update: I seemed to have solved my problem by uninstalling the app and reinstalling and configuring it. It has been three days and so far so good.
