Hello All.
I have had my note 4 for over 2 years and loved it and it has worked flawlessly. Two weeks ago i downloaded and installed the 6.0.1 update. From then on my note was useless. Its very slow. If I try to open an app it takes about 10 seconds. I cant scroll using a browser and it freezes. In addition its on the charger about 4 times per day with a new battery fitted. I have done a full factory reset and its just the same. I have been in touch with Samsung who will fix it but it will be chargeable. Im mad as hell about this as its out of warranty and why should I pay for a repair with an issue created by samsung. I have ended up buying another phone as the note is pretty much unusable. Anyone else having the same issues. Samsung really need to repair this for free!

Welcome to Android Central! Moved from the Marshmallow forum to the Note 4 forum, since this is more likely to be a device-specific issue.

Does this all happen in Safe Mode as well? https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-28897. If not, then it's possible that some 3rd party app you typically install is causing the problems, perhaps because the Marshmallow update is causing conflicts with that app.

This is definitely a third party app conflict, a bad SD Card or an out of memory device. If your device memory is almost full you might need to free it up by deleting somethings, if this works then fine but if not go to settings and search for the app that is consuming your device resource (battery and data) in the background, try to uninstall the app(s) that you don't use and seems to consume much resource but if this doesn't work either then it's definitely a bad SD Card that is causing your device to run slowly. Try using your device without the SD Card.

I have the exact same problem here with my Note 4 ever since the latest update a few days ago my phone has been freezing, lagging, resetting itself and the screen wouldn't wake up. This morning I received a call but the screen wouldn't turn on. So I decided to do a factory reset this afternoon. It got part way but then it said boot failure and it was stuck on the android updating don't switch off phone screen. I eventually had to switch it off and try again. The phone loaded back up with all settings reset but as the reset didn't go properly I factory reset it again. This time the reset completed and it restarted normally so I went about reinstalling my apps and data. The phone started not responding when I came back to it - the screen would not switch on whether I pressed the home button or the power button however the blue LED kept blinking. Holding in the power button caused it to announce that accessibility assistance had been activated but the screen still remained blank. I eventually got the screen to turn on again and it showed it was still loading apps so I thought I would wait for that to finish.
After some time I tried to check the progress of the data/app restore and the screen wouldn't turn on although the led was flashing blue. I tried holding in the power button, pressing or holding in the home button, holding volume down, home and power button and the screen still wouldn't turn on. I took out the battery and the SD card then replaced them and tried to turn on the phone and it won't turn on at all now. I tried plugging it in to the charger and it still won't turn on. So the 6.0.1 update has destroyed my perfectly working phone also :(

There are many many people having the same issue with this phone-me included. This is the workaround that finally seems to be working for me for the last 2 days:

1) Install wake lock - powermanager from the play store (read the reviews-many others having the same issue).
2) Open wake lock and select partial_wake_lock by clicking on it.
3) While the app is open, press and hold down the recent apps button to get to the options menu.
4) Check autostart on boot.

Not sure how long this workaround will work-but I am happy so far...

Two suggestions. Did you try and start the phone without the SD card? Also, do you have another battery? When the battery goes bad I have seen weird issues. If you don't have a second battery I would suggest ordering one of Amazon and they trying it with out the SD card in the phone. If this does not help, try restarting without the SD card and without the SIM card installed.

I too had these issue, and wake-lock was kinda okay solution, but every time I restarted the phone when I switched my battery I would go into boot-loop cycles for a while. I sent the phone in to Samsung in TX to fix it and they did a flash and replaced the LCD and a bunch of other stuff for a $70 charge. When I got the phone back it was like brand new, smooth and all, until I would receive a call and I couldn't hear the person on the other end unless I was using a headphone. So I sent it back in again, and they fixed that, but when I got it back the problem now is that the Bluetooth range is horrible, so I just sent it back again for the 3rd time. Waiting to see what will break this time!!

what I am trying to say is that it is something they can fix (the issues you are all mentioning) however beware what else they will break in the process.(Even with a software update) :)

This is a ploy to get us to ditch the N4 and buy an S7 or an S8. I am planing on buying the N8 when it comes out, but please leave us alone until then Samsung.

Why is it a phone that works great received an update and now is broken...and every excuse is blaming an app? THE PHONE WORKED FINE BEFORE THE UPDATE. If we weren't forced to install these updates, then yes blame the owner. Otherwise the carrier is at fault.

IT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST COMPLAINT OF ALL THE GALAXY NOTE 4 OWNERS
I meet many people here in Las Vegas when I see a Galaxy Note 4 I ask the owner if he/she is happy with it? ALL SO FAR HAVE SAID NOT HAPPY AFTER UPDATE!
Previously were elated with the phone... I as well.
Why would it matter for an 'APP Conflict"??
When you do the Marshmellow upgrade it does an "APP-CHECK"
If there was a compatibility issue?
Shouldn't it had been solved or app deleted?
I gave Samsung an earful last week when Samsung asked me
if I should consider the new Galaxy S8??
WHY WOULD I GET ANOTHER PHONE THAT WILL ULTIMATELY END IN SAME WAY?
I told Samsung would rather get an iPhone (NO NEVER!)
They don't care as we are owners of old devices in their minds.
BUT THEY SHOULD CARE IF WE WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG?
Unfortunately, I'm too spoiled with S-Pen otherwise if another option was available
I would be long gone like a Road Runner Cartoon!

I had same issue. Samsung SD card....fried after update. They will replace, just have to fight them. May tell you 1 year warranty but it is actually 10on most of their cards. I've had 2 updates since then... Tired of this garbage which is only meant to brick your phone to get you to upgrade.

I had this same problem freezing shutting off then sticking in Odin Mode. 3rd party apps can irritate the phone to the point of damage , but the problem isn't the apps it's the UPDATE after all I didn't just download the apps ,I had them I did how ever download the new up date :/. I tested this, almost immediately after the update my phone began to over heat horribly and ruined the battery so I sent in for an entirely new device and battery of course after getting the new device (Note4) I had to download the update once again this time with out the apps ,this time over heating is minimal but phone will not restart with out getting stuck in Odin Mode and will shut off after long periods of use :/ , WAKE LOCK APP seems to be a good temporary fix ,and hard reset action works for Odin Mode but how much longer will my phone last????? next Gen devices are almost $1000. #android #fixthis

You guys/gals need to attempt a reversion from MM to Lollipop 5.1.1. Depending on the carrier/model some phones are capable of doing this. I know Verizon's can because I did it on my spare Note 4... although it's possible that newer MM updates have further locked the phone. When I did it, downgrading was nothing more than downloading LP, and reflashing the OS in Odin. Search on XDA in your respective carrier/model forums for info on this.

I too despise MM, so I feel for you. Take the initiative to look into it if you can't stand the way your phone is behaving. Read, read, read! Tread with care though as reflashing can brick your phone.

I can say the other side. I did a factory reset after MM update and my Note 4 ran great until I traded it in when I upgraded to the Note 8.

I never understood the obsession with jumping to the latest OS (unless there's one feature you absolutely need). I'm on 7.0 on my G6 and I still haven't noticed a notable difference between Marshmallow (G6) and lollipop (Note 4). I hope you're note 4 survives. it's a great phone. on so the best ever.

After the phone working perfectly the update came and it was a nightmare!!

We bought another battery just in case it was the issue but same thing.

We returned phone and got a new one BUT same thing happened to new one after update.

We returned that one and got another one and after a couple of weeks SAME THING after update!!

For sure is not the battery, is not the SD Card, is not the apps installed We left the phone without all this.

Anyone here form TMobile? What is going to happen? Are they going to fix this or return our money?

You probably haven't been reading the forums. EVERYONE is having problems, especially after that last final update. Hmm just exactly when the Note 8 is released? Coincidence? Maybe not. The reason is they made the chips to last 2-3 years. The update to marshmallow puts a lot of stress on it and completely destroys it. 2 of my friends learned the hard way, one of them bought a new Note 8 since she really liked the Note 4. It's a win win situation for Samsung and their pockets.

I ended up buying a S8 after it destroyed mine, still makes me really angry thinking about it.

Samsung are picking up my Note 4 tomorrow. I will update. Wakelock works, but not a permanent solution.

I have been having the exact same issues as everyone else... done every single troubleshooting guide, soft reset, hard reset... the list goes on ... until my phone went completely black and useless. Called Samsung and they said it sounds like a software issue and even though it’s out of warranty that an issue like that would be covered regardless of the warranty. So, got the shipping info emailed to me, shipped it off ... tonight I get an email that just states an updated service cost from $0.00 to $506.56. No explanation of what is wrong or why it suddenly just DIED ON ME! says needs mother board and LCD screen. ... phone still looks brand new and has never been out of an otter box defender case except when been placed into a new otter box defender case or life proof case.... if I pay for a phone and do everything in my power to make sure it is taken care of and not dropped, broken, torn up in any way... why should I just have to suck it up and deal with it if it’s out of warranty because it worked fine until the update! No deals on phones like there use to be. Special rebates with contracts etc... u just pay full price for a phone now... or they allow you to pay for it over the duration of your contract... not doing me any favors . Just make my phone work like it’s supposed to work unless I do something stupid that causes it to not work anymore
