Note 8 Overheating

Hey guys,
I recently bought the 64gb galaxy note 8 (pre-ordered it) model number SM-N950F/DS. After about 2-3 weeks of use, I noticed that my phone gets very hot under heavy use and also overheats sometimes. Before this, I used the galaxy s7 edge and it never overheated on me... although I am using the note 8 heavier. The phone first overheated when i was using mobile hotspot with 4G+ and recording a hyperlapse while at the same time charging the phone with a QC 3.0 charger (it gave a "phone is too hot to use camera" warning). I record a lot of time-lapses and this has happened to me 2-3 times after about 1-2 hrs of use. Other than that, the phone also overheats when using VR on mobile data. Since my house has pretty crap wifi, I tend to use my mobile data when using the gear VR and it overheats after about 20 minutes of use (overheat warning again) and it quits the VR program. This is extremely annoying as it limits me to using VR for only 15-20 minutes before it becomes unusable. I don't even have anything else on! No location, no wifi, hotspot and not even charging. The gear VR has a charging port on it and god knows how long it would last if I used it.

My question is if any of you who use the Note 8 or s8 have the same problem. Is my device faulty or is it just crap heat management on Samsung's part? Should i send my phone in for warranty repair?

Thanks for the help!

Hi there,

My situation is similar to yours, although I was using an iPhone 5S.

As you described, it got hot when the device was used on 4G, but I just thought that's how it works on mobile data.

Hopefully someone can guide you to resolve your issue.

re:

I'd turn it in as faulty. I know VR does overheat a lot of phones, but yours seems to be overheating in other situations. Mine never gets above 85 F unless I am using the fast wireless charger and then it gets to about 102 F. I thought that was pretty warm but yours appears to be much higher. I've never seen a warning or had it shut down. So I would see about getting a replacement.

re:

your note 8 shouldn't get got . mine an must of the poster have all talked about how cool this phone stays . So if your having a heat issue I'd have that checked out . Although some of the thing you describe will have a tendency to make your phone work harder and get warmer and warmer is natural. Now using the VR for some extended time can make your phone get a little hot and the phone is designed to shut down if it does

Will samsung even replace the device though? I have never had to claim the warranty on samsung devices before but I have had crap warranty experiences with other manufacturers before (Apple and OnePlus). How well does samsung honor their warranty? Will they actually listen to my crap or will they turn a blind eye and say its a normal problem?

Thanks for the reply by the way!

Mobile data does seem to effect these new devices more... I have an S5 which takes mobile hotspots like a champ and barely heats up while my s7 edge gets quite hot and note 8 even worse. Maybe its all the damn glass.

Thanks for the reply mate.

Yeah I have seen some people saying that the Note 8 is the coolest phone they have ever had. I seem to have the crap end of the stick here. For example, I wake up in the morning after having wirelessly charged my phone and its warm to the touch even though it has been at 100% for quite some time. You would think that after 100% it would stop producing heat. Meh... I guess you win some and lose some.

Appreciate the reply.

re:

Did you get it direct from Samsung? I have no experience with them. But if not, take it back to the carrier.

re:

Wireless charge every night. This is the coolest running phone I have ever owned. My S8+ frequently felt hot.

re:

How many bars of signal do you have on the 4G when this happens? The weaker the signal, the worse the RF path is between your phone and the nearest cell site. When the path is poor, the phone must not only work a bit harder with error correction on the downloaded data, but more importantly, it will turn the RF power being transmitted by the phone itself up high to try to reach the cell site going that direction. This is also why your battery will run down quickly when you're out in the boonies and the phone is "searching for signal".

It's just a thought, but if you have a bad RF path between your phone and the cell site, this would aggravate the heat issue because the transmitter in the phone will also be working very hard.

I did get it directly from Samsung. The problem is explaining the problem to them. The samsung service centers near me all seem incompetent (under payed staff that could not care less) and since its not an obvious problem, they might just brush it off as "My fault".)

Usually around 2-3 our of 5 bars. Signal is pretty weak but you would think that Samsung would have thought about this. Why even sell a VR set that only works on Samsung phones if it does not even work on simple use cases such as using it with mobile data.

Is your phone warm to the touch when wireless charging and does it continue to be warm even after it reaches 100%? Mine does this every night and I'm not even using the Fast wireless charger! I'm using the first gen wireless charger from them which is the slowest one.

re:

Im on 4g all day long and mine doesn't get hot at all, sounds like yours is faulty unless you have some crap app causing it, I would return it for peace of mind and get another one

re:

This IS concerning, BUT as someone else already pointed out, VR is an overheating culprit for ANY phone. The solution is to use it sparingly, and take "cool down breaks" OR take efforts to keep the device cool in there. The new Daydream headset which the Note 8 support has a built in heatsink, also you can get homebrew heatsinks for the OLD Daydream and the GearVR on ebay. Or you can craft your own, ever seen those blue liquid headache packs? They work nicely. DON'T freeze it, just tape it over the phone or otherwise affix it when you are using the phone in your headset.

With 2-3 bars, this should not be an issue. The transmitter should be operating at a relatively low power level.

Heat directly correlates with power consumption (a Watt is a Watt). Do you get extremely short battery life if you are not charging while performing these same tasks?

It would be good to narrow down whether the excess heat is coming from power use by the phone's operation, or from the charging circuits and/or battery while charging.

If we know the voltage and amp-hour capacity of the battery, and know that it starts out charged fully, and then run the phone using the apps in question until we reach a certain level of battery charge, we can calculate the power consumption rate (in watts). That tells you exactly how much heat is being dissipated in the phone, and will correlate with phone temperature if you account for cooling factors (thermal resistance from the phone to the environment).

In any case, your phone's rate of power use could then be compared with other phones running the same apps.

In other words, if your battery drains a lot faster than other people's do, when running the exact same tasks, then we know that your phone is consuming too much power and has a problem in that regard. But if your battery use rate is about the same as other people are seeing when performing the same tasks, then we can possibly narrow the issue down to the charging system or battery itself in the phone.

It would be nice to be able to compare your phone against another identical phone set up the same, and running under the same exact conditions. Are there any better phone stores for your carrier in your area? It seems like they'd be interested in checking out a phone that overheats constantly. And it seems like Samsung would be interested, too. While it would be a pain to be without your phone, perhaps sending it off to Samsung will be the only way to get a good answer.

re:

I also have heating issue with note 8.It became hot while i use applications that require internet connection including bixby and facebook.Cpu temperature goes up to 69 degree celcius and i went to authorized samsung service centre and they checked and it is device faulty. I never use my ph during charging. It is only 14 days from purchase when i go to service centre. But they say that replacement is only within 7 days from purchase and they will consider for repair or replacemnet. They took my ph with all the accessories and told me to wait their reply. I never heard that replacement for the device is only within seven days. I feel really disappointed with that. By the way i like note 8 so much. It will be nice if there is no heating issue at my preorderd device.

re:

this phone will definitely get pretty toasty after gaming for 20+ minutes, but that's true for every smartphone. thermal throttling on mobile devices is a real challenge, but having said that I've never received that warning before. temp increase while charging or pushing the phone hard is normal but it seems your experience is abnormal.

even when charging though my phone rarely gets up to 27C. Just out of curiosity what's your ambient temp? Do you live somewhere with high temp high humidity? for reference it's 18C outdoors 21 indoors and I'm having no issues. Unless you're ambient temps are in the mid-high 30C range I'd send that phone back. You don't want to take a chance with something exploding in your face.
