Note to Self: Going forward, never purchase a Samsung device with a "promised" sofware feature.

Just a rant, but I'm annoyed that now well into the 3rd quarter of 2016, my S2 3G (AT&T) STILL doesn't have Samsung Pay (SP).

I realize that SP on the carrier devices would be slowed by the carriers, but still, that should have been taken into account when Samsung first rolled out the 3G version of the S2, which, if memory serves, suggested SP would be available in "early 2016".

The rant could apply to my Note 4, as well, which doesn't have functional Samsung Pay either, even though it has NFC, or OS updates to my Galaxy Note 8 tablet or Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, or my ATIV 500-T convertible PC.

I'm resigned to the fact that Samsung, at least in my experience, is almost exclusively a hardware-selling-focused company, and that promised software-based enhancements, not present on the device upon release, rarely materialize.

/Rant off.

I made a statement in another thread about these very promises and people got sensitive. They advertised samsung pay on both the gear s2 and galaxy s6 from the get go. Got the update 6 months late for the s6 and like a year late on the s2.

I'm kind of surprised by that. I've felt the same way about Samsung (and tech companies in general) for years. Samsung has been pretty bold, though - even going back to the original Galaxy Gear, I'm pretty sure they were mocking up screenshots of apps that never existed (and never would) in order to generate interest. But they all do it. LG had a really cool looking watch face in their Urbane 2 LTE promos that showed calendar information along a circle just inside the bezel, and to my knowledge that never happened either. The second rule of tech is that you only buy for what it can do right now, not what sales and marketing say it will be able to do tomorrow.

I guess people can't read specifications. Samsung clearly has listed the models Samsung Pay is supported on. If you have an older model, that is not Samsung's fault!

And OS upgrades are much more a factor of the carriers, not Samsung, Motorola, HTC, etc.!

Actually, I can and do read which models Samsung Pay works on: Samsung Pay - Safe and Simple Mobile Payments

And, since I have one of the 3G versions, as I stated in my OP, I understand that AT&T, like the other carriers, is slowing the process even more. But Samsung said SP would be coming to the Gear S2:
Samsung Pay finally comes to the Gear S2 in a public beta - The Verge

But that doesn't make the wait for the promised functionality any easier - hence the rant.

Reading your post, I wonder if you're on tapatalk and not realizing that you're posting in a smartwatch subforum. Samsung has repeatedly shown renderings of apps on their smartwatches that do not exist at release, basically implying that the functionality exists (or is coming) and then sometimes the app never materializes. It is that practice that people are frustrated with, and it has nothing to do with what models something is currently supported on. Everyone who bought a Gear S2 knew that Samsung Pay was not available at the time of purchase, but I believe (unable to prove) that there was a strong suggestion at some point that it would be coming. Still is, supposedly, as some people have access to a beta version.

Seems like the s2 is going backwards, no more milk music, no Spotify, hell my old gear had media controller app were I could control skips, volume, camera, infrared controller., wtf Samsung

My point is, the published specifications are all that count. Many companies, not just Samsung, print photos and sometimes even articles that give hints of possible coming features. However, when it comes time to actually build, program and license certain features they discover roadblocks and unnecessary expenses. Most of the ads do have some sort of disclaimer with them, warning that the picture may not represent what's really coming.

Agreed. But, here's the original review of the Gear S2 on CNet: Samsung Gear S2 review - CNET

And, the important part of the review (page 2), as far as this thread:

"Mobile payments via Samsung Pay coming later on

Expect mobile payments, too. A future feature that will set this watch apart for Samsung phone owners is Samsung Pay, which should become available via a firmware update."

Realizing a CNet review isn't the absolute authority on the S2, my point is, it's a widely read source of information about technology hardware and software. The review is one of several I read that gave me the confidence to buy the watch in the first place, since even the reviewer felt SP would be coming.

Re: Note to Self: Going forward, never purchase a Samsung device with a "promised" sofware feature.

I've commented on this exact thing with Samsung Pay on my 3G as well. I'll never buy another product based on features that are "coming soon". Hell if you look at the T-Mobile update page for the S2 it says that Samsung Pay was added in the last update but we still don't have it. Samsung needs to get everyone on the same page and stop promising things that the fail to deliver timely or at all.

And no more Nike+!
