This problem just started occurring today. My volume is set on high and yet no noise plays when I get a text, call or email, the only thing that happens is that it vibrates. I'm not sure what the problem is. I am already on my second Epic. First one had unresponsive capacitive touch button. The second one has working capacitive touch buttons but now has a short lag when pulling up messages and now this notification and ringer problem. I have had the Epic for a week now and I am now contemplating switching from the Epic to the Evo. I love the Epic but I don't want to have to replace this phone every month or so. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you all in advance

1. Make sure you have your ringer set to a sound instead of silent.
2. Soft reset ( battery pull)
3. Hard reset via the hardware keys or through menu/settings/privacy

If those don't work your speaker/ringer is bad.

Hard reset erases everything, including your contacts. If they are backed up to google, they will resync after you sign back in. Otherwise you can go into your contacts, press menu, and choose export to sd card. Then, after you hard reset, go to contacts, menu, import from sd card.

You perform a hard reset by either going to menu, settings, privacy, factory data reset

Or

With the phone off, hold volume down + camera + power button until the phone powers on, then follow the instructions on screen.

Ok so let's say someone does a hard reset ok cool, bu what about apps? Are my downloaded apps tied to my gmail account? Sorta like the pre did with webOS if so I will do a hardreset, all my contacts are already on my gmail so no bigge jus weary on trying to re download apps, especially the 1s I paid for

Backup your apps with App Brain, which is tied to your Google account...

The hard reset worked. Exported my contacts to SD then imported them back after. I had to re-download my apps but no biggie, i didnt have too many.

I had the same problem but I didn't want to rest the phone. Just the thought of having to personalize the phone again sounded like a headache! Instead I downloaded an app: vingo. You can get it off the android market, as long as the app is running your ringer will work. Hope this helps! :-)
