Notification Issue with Non-Samsung SMS App

So I was using the Google Messenger (blue and white text bubbles app) app for my texts and my phone stopped giving me notification noises for my texts and stopped even putting them in the notification tray. I switched back to the Samsung Messages app (yellow envelope app) and I got my notifications back. I went through every setting in the Google SMS app and could not find a single one that was off/muted/anything. So far as I could tell, I should have been getting notifications. Also I"m even more confused by the fact that as soon as I made the Samsung SMS app the default, I started getting text notications again.

I'm on Tmobile and running 5.1.1.

Anyone else notice this or have a fix for it?

Go to the App Manager, select Google Messenger, and see if the Show Notifications checkbox is on.

Thanks! That worked. Not an entirely intuitive way of handling that.

Great! I wonder why it was off? Do you recall ever going in there to change that setting? Apps usually have that checkbox on by default.

I don't remember it doing it all, but that doesn't mean I didn't do it by accident at some point.
