It has actually been around for a little bit. That post is from several days ago for it getting on the market. It does work pretty well, but occasionally it will not show a missed message. I am happy with it and don't even use the toggle.

For me it isnt bad. My phone has been off the charger for 17 hours and I am still at 64%. After 8 hours through the night it only dropped 6% so I would say there is nothing wrong with it.

There was a complaint posted late last night on the developers' site that it drains the battery.
I plan to test it myself tonight by sending one of each type of communication to myself before going to bed, checking battery level, and then leaving it off the charger overnight.

My results: with all 4 lights showing when I went to bed, the battery level went from 97% to 47% in ~8 hours last night.
But .... reality check ... during the day, for most people, the LED notification light(s) will only be one for the short period when users are away from their phone: this is the main purpose of the widget.
At night, most users will be recharging their phone so it won't matter, but if not, one can toggle the widget off to save battery life. Those who expect messages to arrive every night can just wake the phone up in the morning to check the expected messages.

Same here. I went to bed with 47% and woke up around 8 hours later to it completely dead.

I downloaded it and it shows installed but I don't see it in applications in the main screen and when I sent a message nothing lit up. I waited but no lights.
Turned phone off even did a batt pull and tried again still no lights
