notification not showing

Sometimes I hear a message, but when I turn on screen, the notification isn't there. At these time it is often unresponsive to fingerprint and other actions. I have tried emptying cache, restart and even factory wipe. It always seems to return. Thoughts?

Something is making a notification. Get a lot of notification tones (ZEDGE is good), and set each app that makes notifications to a different notification tone. Then at least you'll know which app is doing it.

Sorry, didn't explain well. I am always able to find out what the notification was from. My concern is the lack of responsiveness.
