notification sound plays over sms notification sound

Are you using the stock messaging app, or a third party app like Handcent?

Okay... just so we're on the same page. You went into the messaging app, pressed Menu>Settings>Notification Sound and selected a song and it isn't playing it?

If you did something differently than what I described above, let me know.

i created a ringtone from my music and applied that ringtone to lets say my emails and i created a DIFFERENT ringtone and set that for the default notification. so now ONLY the default notification sound is playing when i receive an email/message. i hope that made it clearer

Okay. I think I've got it. Go back in and re-apply the ringtone to your emails. Then go into your Messaging app, Press Menu>Settings Make sure "Play Notification Sound" is checked, then below that choose a Notification Sound. Unless you set the sounds in the respective apps, the phone will use the default sound.
