Notifications - Data vs Wifi

[Android Central Question]

Hi all, i think i may have enabled an option somewhere but i cannot find it to turn it off!

I am only receiving notifications from apps when connected to wifi.

As an example, when opening WhatsApp the other day i had numerous message/notifications pop up, but did not receive any notifications whilst the phone was sat idle on the desk, this applies to all apps i use.
It's like opening the app causes it to connect and check for new messages etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may have disabled background data for those apps while on mobile data.

On my Pixel 2 XL running Pie, this is adjusted by going into Settings > Apps & Notifications > Tap the app > Data Usage
