New to the Android world! I'm a former Apple owner. I just upgraded to the Maxx HD. I love the new phone, but there's one deal breaker I am coming across.
I guess I was spoiled with the New Message notification indicater that would let you know there's a new message on the IPhone. I'm not a fan of the status light bar at the top of the phone.

My question is; is there a way that the Maxx HD will be able to do that?

You should see a short message notification in your status bar, followed by a persistent new mail icon. You can then pull down the notification bar to see more detail.

Some apps will pop up a small "toast" message as well, though I haven't found anything as clear and obvious as what Apple and blackberry could do.

Light flow is a fantastic app many people use to customize how their alerts work.

Edit: oh and welcome! I'm a former blackberry user myself. This is my first Android. After four weeks I'm still liking it more and more :)

The lack of notification LED stems from sync with your Google account. It seems to sync the info from your previous phone, which my not work on the Motorola. I did a factory reset, didn't sync with my Google account until after completing the set up, and notifications are working fine

What is better than the blinking light right above the ear piece? The flashing camera light of the iPhone only happened at the time of the alert. At least the constant flash on rmhd let's you know if there is a message when you have not been near your phone

Former iPhone user myself, and I missed the way it handled new messages also. There are a few apps that will help you feel more "at home."
You can use either Sms Popup or Glowfly to make the phone wake up and show an incoming popup on the lock screen, similar to ios.
Lockerpro will place notifications on the lock screen for multiple apps, similar to the info shade on ios. It will also create banner notifications almost exactly like ios does.
Those are just a couple of ways to make the phone handle notifications that you might feel more familiar with.

In browsing around, it looks like "iPhone notifications" also does what I think you're looking for.

I used to use chomp SMS on my Casio commando, and it would show a popup when getting a message.

I'd think it would work the same on the RM HD/ jelly bean.
