Notifications return after being cleared

My cleared notifications reappear with the next alert. Is there a way to clear an alert from the notification area and have it stay cleared? Example: I'll miss a call and see the alert, then clear it. Later in the day if I miss another call, the earlier missed call will show, along with the new missed call, in the notification area (drop down screen). Same happens with text alerts. A new text alert can bring back my earlier missed call alert. Strange. Any ideas on what I can try besides a hard reset? Thanks.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that may be specific to Missed Calls: you actually have to tap on the alert icon and let it show you the missed call to get it to go away for good. I seem to remember that happening with an earlier phone, and in a quick test, it seems to be the case with the S4 too. It's not a bug, it's a feature. :'(

Hi Dave. So are you saying that pulling down the notification screen (where I can see the missed call info) and then selecting clear, is not the way? I need to actually select the notification itself, in order to permanently clear it? Thanks for the quick response.

You need to go to the originating app--e-mail, sms, or phone--and mark the message as read (or in the phone app view the recent history). One way to go to originating app is to click on the notification. Otherwise, the unread messages (or unviewed missed call) will continue to appear in the notifications whenever another message is received (or call missed). This is intended behavior.
