Notifications while headphones plugged in

Hey people, so, I recently just made the switch from iPhone to S8. Last Android I had was the S3 and I'm not sure if it did this then. Is it normal for when you have headphones plugged in for the notifications and what not to still come from the phone speaker? In iPhone land, all audio is done through the headphones. Just wanting to make sure it's not just an issue with my device or anything. Thanks in advance!
