How do I shut off notifications? I have to figure eating battery power and I don't need to know that Staples has 10% off paper clips. In addition, there is a bell sound for each notification.
How do I stop it?

Uninstall whatever app you installed to produce the notifications. Airpush from the Market might help you identify it.

that didn't work- is there anything in settings that I need to shut off? I am still getting dopey notifications and driving me nuts

YOU have installed something that is doing that. We have no idea what it is. It is not normal.

You installed a crappy app that is doing that. It is not the phone. You'll have to figure out which app is doing it.
