Nova launcher and Google search function

I'm using nova launcher on my Nexus 6 and sometimes when I hit the Google search widget and type something in, I won't get any results. This can happen up to a few times a day and gets very annoying. The only way to fix this as I've seen is to reboot my phone. As anyone else here at this issue before? I sent back to the stock Google now launcher for comparison because it's never happened with the stock launcher. I just got soo used to the nova launcher with the smaller icons but I'd the search function doesn't work, I may not have a choice. Thanks for your help!
