Have been waiting for GB to root. Now that I have it, are the instructions for rooting the same as they've always been?

Exactly the same. But, you have to unlock the BOOTLOADER first.

1. You need to go to this link Revolutionary and follow the instructions.

2. Download "Rom Manager"

3. Then download your favorite ROM (mine is das BAMF Forever) and use ROM Manager to install.

**** BACKUP DATA ***** BACKUP DATA **** BACKUP DATA ***** BACKUP DATA ***** ...and make sure you **** BACKUP DATA *****

I use "MyBackup"

I was just like you waiting on GB to hit before I was going to root. Defcon is exactly correct. Revolutionary was a breeze to gain root. I wasn't timing it but I would estimate it took me 20 minutes to have root and working in backups.

If I don't plan on installing a new ROM do I still need to unlock the bootloader? Mostly I want more control over my phone (and the HTC mail app is great for multiple exchange acckunts) so I wasn't planning on a new ROM.

There are lots of roms that are sense based, like bamf forever which is based on the ota gingerbread but with sense 3.0.

This thread really isn't needed at all if you had just started here http://forums.androidcentral.com/th...ow-root-unroot-thunderbolt-revolutionary.html

In a fun side note, installing bamf forever using ROM manager is not recommended...I think most developers would recommend not using ROM manager to install roms, it is most useful for flashing clockwork recovery.

Ok guys I tried it and can select recovery using the volume up or down button. What am I doing wrong. It just reboot on its own after not allowing me to select recovery.

Need a bit more explanation. The buttons aren't working? What step of the process are you on according to this Guide?

Step 10? If so do you see the screen explained in step 9? Revolutionary on the top in blue with S-Off?

I made it to step 9 but it won let me select recovery. Buttons wont work then it boots to the section were it goes to (sd ZIP) and ask me if I want to start update. At that point the volume does work.

I do see Revolutionary on the top of screen and bellow that it says MECHA XD SHIP S-OFF in green color.

You need to do the next part from the computer you loaded the revolutionary on. If you haven't already watch this

If I understand correctly you are at about 6 minutes into this video. That should explain where to go from there.
Cyber Warrior has the video embedded into his how to guide.

Thats a great video.

My problem starts at 7:20 or so and I can't select anything in that menu using the volume button. That's when It reboots and start going to the zip file.

If you have that on there yes. That causes issues on reboots. I thought about asking you if you had it on your phone while I was eating dinner. Came back and noticed you had posted the above.

Thanks, by removing it it stopped the reboots and it works correctly. Now to find a stable ROM. So, even though I got GingerBread if I install a ROM I still need to flash a Radio?

As long as you find a gingerbread based rom you are fine without installing a new radio. The radio is not replaced when you install the ROM.

Yes it is based off the Android 2.3.4.
Most of the roms have a very good explanation of what they are made of and what they have done to change stuff around.

For example: BAMF Forever 1.0.7 says Mod base versions that will work fine with this ROM:
2.10.605.1, 2.11.605.0, 2.11.605.2
