OC'ing the processor

As someone who can't leave things well enough alone, one of the first things I plan to do after rooting is OC the processor to 1.5Ghz.

I guess OC'ing is really not the correct term, since the OMAP4460 is designed to operate up to 1.5Ghz anyway.

I was wondering if anyone else here has similar plans for their GN? Or any other hardware "mods" you might be planning?

I have a friend that OC'ed his GSII from 1.2 to 1.4Ghz, and he's noticed a substantial increase in speed, from opening apps to web page loading. with no ill effects such as added heat, or any stability issues.

Could be fun. My old droid got a nice performance boost from overclocking.

But if the GNex is already as fast and smooth as most reviews are saying, I wouldn't bother. Even if it doesn't get hotter, it could mean worse battery life.

If Im going to see negligible improvement in speed and legitimate decrease in battery life, I wouldnt make the trade.

I can say that my Rezound at 1.5 is as fast as I could need and havent had a moment yet where I wished it was faster. So if the Gnex is like that, I will be happy.

You bet your ass I plan on OCing this beast of a processor. I'm extremely curious to see how well it scales. 1.5ghz is great, it should be able to achieve this without issue, given it's the stock clock. I'm going for 2.0ghz, hopefully I get a good processor as all are not equal. Is there a need for this? No. Is there really a need for my Core i7 920 to be overclocked to 4.5Ghz? No, but it's way awesome!

I tend to go back and forth on overclocking. There's just something about flashing new roms and kernels and messing with clock speeds even though it works without doing that. I even underclocked for a while to see what kind of battery life I could get.

2ghz? As much as I'd love for that to happen I don't think it will. I'm betting we get around 1.8ghz max.

Overclocking the processor will be necessary for any performance hog out there. Especially since the GNex isn't holding up very well in the benchmark ratings. So we'll all have to overclock this thing if we want top performance.

The OMAP4460 was supposedly clocked at 1.5ghz stock, yes? If so then I think 2.0ghz might not be that unfeasible. Stable and usable? Only time will tell. But I remember someone not long ago OCing the Transformer to 1.5/1.6 when Tegra2 runs at 1.0 stock (a 50% OC), so I think a 33% OC on the 4460 could certainly be done.

Hell, my Eris is running at 712mhz up from 500~, a 40% overclock on a POS processor, anything is possible.

I'd be curious to see if 2.0 was capable. While many processor are clocked .5ghz more I'm curious why its under locked to begin with. Just for battery? Or maybe some weird colling issue in extreme conditions....tough to say at this point. For all I know it melts its solder joints somewhere.... :)

I hate your entire paragraph. Benchmarks on Android are all mostly crap, since one benchmark is better for one type of CPU than the other..ect

The Omap is holding fine, the GPU is a bit dated but w/e I dont have any issues with my Droid X playing games. And thats even older.

Benchmarks? Ics is brand new and benchmarks are not optimized for ics yet, wait a couple months and see

I'm curious to know: When you overclock the OMAP are you also overclocking the onboard GPU as well? I know they both serve different functions, but it would be cool if you can independently clock the processor and GPU. Not sure if it's possible.

As for the OMAP 4460 hitting 2.0Ghz haha, yea...it may not be possible, but won't know till you try it. My OG Droid can run 1100Ghz. That's quite a bit higher than its stock 550Mhz...double the speed. Getting to 1.5ghz may require a boost in voltage which in-turn should drop battery life. We will just have to wait and see. Plus there's the whole heat issue as well. More voltage..more heat.

Ah! So many things to try once the LTE version comes out.

I can't wait!

You sure can. I have both my CPU and GPU overclocked

Well, i have some bad news for you guys, it was first mentioned by Adrynalyne in irc a few days ago and then I did some digging into specs for the board that samsung put in this phone. It seems that it might not be able to support a high enough voltage output to run the CPU at 1.5 GHz nicely, but as of right now it is just speculation. We'll see what happens when some devs get their eager beaver hands on it.

Really? I was told that wasnt possible on my OG Droid when OC became all the rage. So what is your Nexus's GPU stock speed and what do you have oC'd to?

Using morfic's Trinity kernel, which has the GPU overclocked to 220MHz, up from stock 200MHz.

Ah. Lovely!

Well hopefully we can get the Nexus to dance for us once we get it and more importantly, the community gets a hold of it.

I'm hoping we can really tap in to the bull potential of the device.

Hey guys....looks like a developer was able to bring the OMAP 4460 up to 1.4Ghz from the stock 1.2Ghz.

Also, the developer hit 1.6Ghz, but it remains unstable thus far.

Both overclocks are kernel based of course and still very unstable. The article reports that at 1.4Ghz, the phone seemed to slow down in feel...but benchmarking showed much higher scores rivaling that to the GS2.

The slow down in feel, is probably due to the Kernel not playing so well, again, these are early Kernels still.

Anyways, things are looking good so far! Lots of potential!
