Off Button

Does the most recent iteration of wireless AA have an off button to completely disconnect it from my car? When I tried it in 2022 there was no easy way. I had to block the app and disconnect the phone on the car head unit and shut AA on the head unit then reconnect phone to bluetooth only and keep wifi off

My car never ever wanted to disconnect. When connected the physical radio buttons (yes real buttons) lost all functionality with AA connected even if I hit home button.

I'd love to give AA another chance but not if it is so difficult to get rid of it when I want to.

So is there a real "OFF BUTTON or setting) in 2024 AA?

There is no built-in functionality for this other than to delete the car from the connected devices list every time you get out of the car. There is, however, the option to only start AA if it was used in the previous drive session (but AA will still connect to your car's BT, just not start the Projection Mode on it).

The problem I have with that is that using the voice command button on my steering wheel will give commands to Google rather than my car... like "increase cabin temperature" won't mean anything to google.

Have you checked your car's infotainment settings or manual? Mine does both depending on what's connected (Hyundai, Kia, Mazda): Long press gives the command to AA while single-tap gives the command to the car's infotainment directly.

Does that happen when AA is disconnected? Can you set the buttons up and is it an aftermarket unit?

When AA is disconnected any press goes to the infotainment. No aftermarket, stock audio system.

You can also turn off wireless AA connections in developer settings in AA.

First you have to setup developer settings in Android Auto:
Settings -> Connected Devices -> Android Auto
Scroll down and tap "Version" about ten times (When you get close, a pop up tells you "x more times")

Once you have access to developer settings, you can turn on/off Wireless Android Auto
Settings -> Connected Devices -> Android Auto
Click the three dots in upper right, select Developer Settings
The top entry should be Wireless Android Auto. Check in box is enabled, Empty box is disabled. Click the box to change.

NOTE: This is NOT going to stop your phone from using Bluetooth to connect to the car. This only turns off the WIFI connection used for Android Auto.

Once you do all that, you may want to remove your car from the previously connected device list in Android Auto. Not sure how it might affect if you try to connect via cable. So, you might want to have the car's settings removed from your phone's AA in case you want to set it up to connect via cable.

Also, as was said before, your Car infotainment is likely what is causing the button to go directly to Google assistant when connected through AA. My car is Long Press button for Google, short press button for car infotainment. My wife's car will not use the car infotainment at all if AA is running. Neither will use Google Assistant if AA is NOT running. Both cars are Subaru, both are same year. Mine is an Outback. Hers is a Crosstrek. You would need to look up your specific manual to figure that out.

I only knew about it because using wireless AA interferes with any hotspots you might be using since it consumes the wifi antenna. I use the car's hotspot on longer trips because the antenna for the hotspot is outside and on top of the car for better reception in the finge areas. So, I had to dig to find a way to turn it off.

I use hotspot a lot in my car to watch my shop camera or house while driving constantly switching between them and AA
