Motorola Atrix 4G Does Not Support Non-Market App Installations

No surprise here, AT&T keeps on crippling android phones. Hopefully the sideload wonder machine works well with the atrix.

This is the same carrier that brought us the iPhone. Maybe AT&T actually believes that it needs to protect customers from themselves...

I think theres two sides to this coin,
Heads: at&t doesn't want customers to be able to do everything to their phone to keep a little control or

Tails: SJ has been whispering a little Apple policy into at&t's ear over the last few years and at&t has been listening when they shouldn't have been.

I'm just bs'ing really, I have no idea why at&t does what they do sometimes

Just to be clear on the subject. Sites like blapkmarket.com (even though all of these apps come from the Android Market) will still need the SWM to install these apps??

How about AT&T is afraid of casual users installing tethering apps on their own or apps that AT&T forces you to pay a subscription while every other carrier offers it for free (like Where)? I think it's telling that the Android Market is missing quite a few apps on AT&T, yet other carriers allow the full thing...

Yea its kind of stupid... Can someone post the apps necessary for side-loading on the device and getting to the full market. I would like to avoid using the wonder machine if possible.

i hope at&t loosens up to this thankfully there the wonder machine and the adb method but still come on at&t you cant stop us!!!!!!! just submit!

your precious apple left you let us be free!!!!!!;)

As far as apps that are on the market but hidden from AT&T customers try the following

A) remove your sim and connect to the Market via wifi

OR

B) 1) Put phone in airplane mode
2) Reactivate wifi
3) Head on over to the market and get Where, PdaNet, etc

This doesn't help with sideloading out of market apps, but it is a work around for apps that are available on the market to other carriers.

Im wondering if any one reviewing has used the side loading machine. I want the Atrix as my first Android and cant wait. Im also curious as to using tethering but dont want to lose my unlimited data as all i want to tether is my ipod touch because of some games i have on it that arent available on android. I know people say install a third party tethering app but how good is that ? will i get caught and charged for tethering?

Where is just a geolocation app like Aroundme. Nothing special and does not require root.

It went bye on my phone when I saw it continuously ran as a service.

Where is typically preinstalled on at&t phones and if you use it read the fine print it is a 2.99/mo subscription and shows up on your bill under subs and other charges as 2.99 find people/places. More bloatware IMO

Where is useful for me to finding cheap gas prices and movie schedules. I downloaded the free version off the market though. Screw AT&T and their attempts to nickle and dime me over apps that already freely available.

Thanks, for the info. Is the att version any better than the free one or should i install the free one asap to avoid the fee?

BTY I was a big Where user on my 3gs and was wondering if it was the same thing on android.
