I picked up an LG G Watch yesterday for $50. I figured this will let me know if I am interested in this as a product without too much investment.

What are essential apps I need? I have an S6 that I paired with; can I also pair it to my work cell (droid maxx)?

Any tips tricks and knowledge will be greatly appreciated!

I really like Coffee and Amazon. Other than that, Wear integration with Google is so tight (as expected) that I haven't really messed with other apps. Navigation, Play Music, Gmail, Search, Weather, Fit... It's all there.

I travel a lot, so Airline apps are also handy.

I did the same as you after I bought a Samsung Gear S (Tizen), though I paid $100 for my G Watch. Frankly, the cheap G runs circles around the Gear S, except in the hardware department where the S is just better looking. So now I'm waiting for the Moto 360 v2 for a fancier Wear watch.

Thanks for the info. Not sure what coffee is but I will definitely check it out.

I've had fun designing my own watch face with WatchMaker Pro.

Yeah, watchmaker. Even if you aren't going to design your own faces, the amount of free high quality faces available for this is mind blowing. I always just shake my head when I see someone using a stock face or one-off paid face from the play store.

I use Pujie Black to make my watch faces, almost too many options. The app can also be set for square faces and the faces can be shared through facerepo.com.

Wear Mini Launcher, Just A Minute watch face, Keep, Microsoft Note, Audio Recorder. I don't have a lot of.Android Wear apps yet. I'm picky.

I've paid for a couple of apps that have been worthwhile for me, namely Minimal and Elegant watchface and Wear Messenger.

I too bought a used G Watch to see if I would "get" smartwatches. It's not perfect, but I like the concept.
