Did the hard reset because the thing randomly shuts dwn, which is inconvenient in the middle of a call or when I oversleep an hour and a half because the alarm didn't go off.
Now it shuts down by itself if I try to go into mass storage mode (only 1 for 3 tries)
Odd item of interest is that it did not clear all the data. Still fould pdf files and a couple odd files in the download folder.
I really wanna use my alarm with some semblance of confidence.
Do I hard reset again or wait til my contract is up and get rid of this POS phone and carrier.
Sprint is tearing down towers, I'm sure. I now roam in my own basement, and have YET to have this 4G they sold me.

stock. And of course it hasn't shut down since i posted this. Deleted Skype and Color Note apps after the last shut-down. Don't know if this effected anything. Still curious about it not deleting all the data at the hard reset though. Noticed on here that most Samsung phones have this random shut-down issue.:-\

The download folder is on your SD card. That is NOT touched during a factory reset. You need to format that separately (if you WANT to do that).

If it means anything, I have only had a "random" shut down while using a cheap 3500mah battery. Never seemed to do it on the stock 1800 battery.

Thanks. :) Smart people are just the best!

Makes sense because even though the reset isn't supposed to touch the card, in my ignorant paranoia i removed the card before i did it. I did take those files off the card later, i just didn't know where they were since it shows as all one file with subfolders when i connected it to my laptop (successfully that one time). Maybe a replacement stock battery is the next thing, if it shuts down again. I'm all kinds of happy my alarm went off this morning, so i'm in a forgiving mood. For now. Until the next thing goes wrong.

This phone and carrier have tried my patience. Got it in December 10, and by January I was having a replacement screen put in, no fault of mine. It had a dead spot right down the middle. When i was taking the spare case off of it yesterday, the screen looked like it was going to come completely off the phone in one corner. My keyboard cracked because the slide is so tight and the keys are scraped. Took Sprint forever to get Froyo out, and I still haven't been able to use 4g at home or at work, despite being promised Froyo within a month of buying the phone, and 4g shortly after. I was never able to use e-mail app that came on the phone until the GB update. K-9 worked, but not totally reliable. Now Sprint is supposedly working on this really fast 4g. The Sprint store was smart enough this time to admit they have no idea when that will be working. I really wanted give Sprint a try, being the underdog and all, but I've been sadly disappointed. Was a bad move to change from T-Mobile after 12 years. Gadget envy doesn't always work out well. Meanwhile, my kid is still using a the Droid 1 that she rooted, that's been dropped a zillion times. It gives her no grief at all.
