Android Central Question

This started with the most recent update (version 9, security patch 1/5/19). My Google Photos app works per usual, displaying pictures from the camera app as well as downloaded pictures from chrome, etc.

The Camera app has a function to view pictures that have been taken by tapping on the thumbnail and swiping to the left. You should, and used to be able to, go through every picture taken by the app in chronological order all the way back to the first photo taken.

Since the update, I can only see pictures that I have taken since the update, with the addition of one random photo I took a month ago. I have taken pictures since and before that photo. All of the photos are available through the Photos app, just not the Camera app.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Old pictures taken via camera app can be seen in Photos app but not in Camera app

UPDATE: I checked the file browser and it only shows the 4 photos I've taken since the update. It seems as if the update deleted the local files for the pictures taken through the camera app. Why would this happen? Is there any way to reverse it without manually combing through the pictures in Google Photos?

Hi,

Thanks for merging the threads, my apologies I'm new here. The phone is a Pixel 2. I am confident that I did not use the free up space feature on Google Photos, because if I try to do it now it says there are 97 files that can be removed, and I have not created 97 items since the issue arose.

But are all of the missing photos in your Google Photos cloud? That is, if you go to photos.google.com on your computer, do you see all of the photos there?

Yes, all the photos are available on the Google Photos Cloud. However I don't believe that Google Photos prompted the deletion, I think it's tied to the software patch.

Plus, my end goal here is to have all the pictures taken by the pixel to to be returned to the local storage on my phone.

Sorry, I don't have a definite explanation for why the photo files were deleted, if it wasn't due to the Free Up Space feature. At least the photos are still safely stored somewhere! I'm not sure if there's an easy way to get them all back onto Internal Storage in one fell swoop -- the only way I know to locally save a photo from Google Photos is from an individual photo's menu options. If you multi-select photos, it doesn't have a Save to Device or Download option.
