Old-school voicemail icon won't disappear when using Visual Voicemail

The phone: Moto X running Kitkat 4.4.4 on AT&T in New York City. Visual Voicemail version 2.9.3.14 (the latest version as of today, 9/4/2014).

The problem: When I get a voicemail, the message comes to Visual Voicemail and the little voicemail tape icon appears at the top. When I listen to the message in Visual Voicemail, the tape should disappear (it used to). Now it doesn't disappear. I have to call voicemail manually and, once I hang up, then the icon disappears.

Attempted fixes: Called AT&T and the person did something on their end that fixed the problem for a week. But then my voicemail box unexpectedly got totally reset (password, greeting--everything) and Visual Voicemail stopped working. Had to reset my password and greeting manually, then reinstall Visual Voicemail. Now Visual Voicemail works again... but the voicemail tape icon doesn't disappear! Back where I started!

Any similar experiences or suggestions?

Not sure if this helps but when I use Google Voice for my VM it does the same thing. So it could be standard. Been a long time since I have used the att/carrier VM services.

Prior to this latest version of Visual Voicemail (which coincided with my upgrade to 4.4.4, so hard to tell which is the cause), the voicemail indicator did disappear when I heard the message through VVM. That is the way it should work.

I just installed it about 45 minutes ago and it seems to be working fine, no extra icon. It appears for a split second and then is gone before I can even access VVM. I did notice in the update log on the Playstore that on 9/5 AT&T did an update which included some bug fixes.
