Galaxy S5, Kit-Kat 4.4.4, Calendar and email stopped giving any notifications, and

My Galaxy S5, has stopped giving any visual or audible notifications for both the Gmail app, and the default Calendar app. Also, I have to manually make the Gmail app retrieve all email, otherwise it never would.
This started December 2014, and worked perfectly until then.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with Verizon tech support who checked and re-checked every setting, and had me reset to default factory settings, which was a huge pain. I declined to do a hard reset of the phone, which was their next attempt at a fix.
Anyone have/solve this problem?

Welcome to Android Central! Try booting into Safe Mode, which temporarily disables all 3rd party apps. http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-10404. Steps are at the bottom of the link.

If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, then something you installed is causing the problem. You may have to uninstall apps one by one until the problem disappears. If the problem persists in Safe Mode, then it's more likely to be a hardware or firmware problem.
