On screen button question pixel 2

Got pixel 2 a couple days ago and love it. This my first phone with on screen navigation buttons and it seems that they never go away unless I'm watching a video. Any way to get them to drop out when I'm reading something and not scroll through anything?

Same question here.
As the buttons are almost always on, there is literally no difference in screen size compared to an iPhone 7 or 8. Which is kinda disappointing, as the body size of the Pixel 2 is almost identical to the iPhone X.

In some apps, the bar with the buttons at least becomes transparent which helps a lot. This would be great to have system wide.

What needs to happen is the app needs to support "immersive mode" in order to hide the navigation and status bars. Look at an app like Crossy Road, this supports immersive mode.
