alright so, my EVO is my toy. Keep it on me all day but its my second phone as I use my BB for my business. EVO is great when I go to a customers house and I use wifi tethering to give my laptop NET. Also use it to watch a movie when Im traveling but EVO barely lasts 3 hours watching a movie (really stinks...any tips for that?)

Point of my post, I'd like to update my phone..

I'm pretty good at following instructions as I rooted my phone to 2.2 using the manual method when it first came out...have a basic stock rom on there and pretty much only care about free wifi tethering.

My S-off IS SET to off which i guess is a good thing...i also have amon ra as my recover tool, i would like to backup my phone contacts and apps so I dont have to CLEAR out my phone completely and restart from scratch...i think the last update that came out you had to do that and that was the reason why I just said I dont feel like going through the hassle.

from where I'm at right now do I follow the steps for rooting? I see most people hare their S-ON but mine is already OFF...

any recommendations on where to go to be most current? I'm also interested in running another ROM if it will extend my batter life but again Im not on my EVO that often.

If you like the look and feel of the stock Rom you can try Sprint lovers Rom, it is based on the latest update and has all the goodies built in. Plus backing up your apps and data is easy with titanium backup

Also it you want something custom and totally new with great battery life I would suggest CM7 with an SBC kernel.

Three hours of watching movies will eat up battery on any ROM... LoL or any phone... But a cleaned up custom ROM will help out a bit.

Good suggestion on Sprint Lovers. It keeps you looking looking and feeling pretty stock.

I like using the Calkulin's EViO 2 ROM and it is pretty good for battery life because the kernel that installs with it runs undervolted when the phone is idle.

thanks all for the rom tips...will check out sprint lovers...question is now how do I upgrade or unroot and re root....is it a matter of just downloading the sprint lovers rom and installing it under amon ra?

both me and my wifes phone are using same software version and were used to stock feel...( i run setcpu)

so what are my noob friendly steps to upgrading?

It's a good idea to backup your current settings a programs with a Nandroid backup using Amon_RA.

Your contacts should be synchronized with your Google account, so they will re-download after you set up Gmail.

If your HBoot is already set to S-OFF, then you can just copy the zip file for Sprint Lovers ROM to your SD card and use the Amon_RA recovery to wipe the caches and then flash from a zip file.

Be sure to use a MD5 Sum calculation tool to verify that the zip file for the ROM is good. I have seen a few people with problems that get stuck while they are flashing because the download had a problem and the MD5 Sums were wrong but they didn't verify them.

ok thanks that sounds good...it's all coming back to me now...what if however I don't want the sprint lovers rom and just want to stay with the stock rom but have the latest updated ota and have that be rooted? are those still being released?

Isn't that where you're at now? Stock but rooted for free wifi tethering?

yup, and basically would just like to be at the newest version...so if it's just a matter of flashing the stock rooted (most updated) ota rom then Id rather do that then say run a sprint lovers...not sure if their one in the same...stil learning thanks for the help.

so are you still on 2.1 and you're looking to upgrade to 2.2? Or you're just checking to see if there is something new?

im on 2.2 and wanting to upgrade to the newest software version..i guess i should say im on 3.29 and wanting to get to 3.7...just because I feel like im a few software versions old...wonder if it's even needed what i'm causing all this fuss about.

If you want to use Sprint Lover's, it is based off the latest Sprint OTA.

A quick google search for "sprint lovers xda" brings up [ROM] 02/25/11 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.2 | 3.70.651.1 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One - xda-developers .

Directions cannot get any simpler than what is posted in that thread. If you can follow directions, that thread will get you sorted. The difference between this and the post right above is that this update is a 1 stop shop for updates--meaning it also updates your radios. If you use the ROM in the previous thread you also have to update radios manually in recovery.
