One giant leap for Smartphones, one huge MISS for Motorola....

Hi everyone,

I have been stalking these forums for quite some time now and have finally decided I had to say some things and ask some questions. I just got my Droid X yesterday coming from the DInc. I must say I love the big screen and the overall look and OS feel of the phone. However it seems to me that Motorola could have dont better.... A LOT better with this device. In my opinion it has the capability to be the best android phone available without a doubt. But to build a phone with better specs than the original but worse hardware...REALLY!? It is my pet-peave (spl?) to have a phone with a soft speaker volume. I mean the phone is meant #1 to be a phone. If I can't hear my ringtone in a semi noisy environment or riding down the highway then what good is it as a phone? The call speaker quality is clearer than my Inc but in the time I have used it seems to be harder to make the voices out due to the tone and low volume level. #2 as a multimedia device. I play tons of youtube videos and outside in my carport with no real noise it was hard to make out some of the songs without cuping my hand around the back to direct the sound forward. Overall reception of the phone I would say is better than the Inc. However if I'm in a crowded area I doubt I could carry on as good of a conversation. I mean really did they even test this phone before shipping them. If I had been on the D1 testing team and then the DX team for Moto I think I would have said "Wait a minute, something's not right". And I can guarantee that the alarm will not wake me up. I am a fairly heavy sleeper and my Inc has no trouble raising me but on this thing I will be fired in a week for being late. Guess I'm going to drag the good ole alarm clock out of the closet...

Maybe I had too high of expectations due to the posts I read on the device and the people i talked to about it. I doubt that 2.2 will make much difference in the speakers volume and I almost believe its the speaker itself not the software. If they could fix this problem I would have no reason to reconsider my decision however I think a Fascinate or my trusty DInc is in my near future. It will be hard to say goodbye to the best phone that almost existed. Maybe it will become miraculously louder over the weekend... We all can dream....

Feedback is welcomed, maybe there is something I'm missing....Thanks!

Actually, Motorola has confirmed that it is a software issue, and is providing a fix with the FroYo release.

Thanks for the info. I hope I can enjoy my froyo before the 30 days is up because if they dont fix it...its gotta go back. If they do however, I will be ever so happy that I get to keep my DX.

It's the best phone I've owned in all respects, but I think you should probably give up and wait for something else.

afaik, you can only exchange your phone once. You said you came from a Droid Incredible, right?

Weird. I've never experienced volume problems of any sort, and calls are crystal clear. I guess Motorola got my DX right.

You want low volume, and crappy call quality? Switch to AT&T. Trust me.

I am not unhappy with my volume either. Alarm wakes me up, I can hear it ringing across the house, media is loud enough for me to hear..and I have hearing issues with my ears, too.

Volume good here. Smoke it is possible that you have a defective speaker or some other issue.
My ringer (and notifications) are so loud I have to set the ringer volume down to 50% just to bear it.
In fact last night I forgot to set the ringer down and at 3:25am I found myself awaken by an email notification (along with my wife) and had to turn down ringer.
I am not a huge YouTube watcher but in the few that I have don't recall any issues.
And the alarm is my daily means of getting up.
I would suggest taking in to Verizon and verifying yours is up to par with specs.

Thanks for all the answers guys. I have read many complaints about the speaker and many saying they have no problem. I will contact CS and see what they are willing to do. I dont think exchanging it would count as my 30 return policy since it is defective. Cuz if so its a gamble whether I would get a good one or not.

Just talked to CS and they are sending me a replacement phone. I can only hope that it is about 2x louder and I will have the perfect phone.

it is a ton louder with the 2.2 leak. It will be fixed, but it is a software issue. I thought mine was loud enough also until I compared the difference between 2.1 and 2.2. it is very noticeable.

I would have held off until the update comes because issue is a software bug and a number on individuals reported getting device changed out and volume was the same also there will be a strong possibility that they will send you out a refub device... I wouldn't let them replace mine because I was told that replacement will come from insurance company which means it most likely wont be a new unit.

Hope you have better luck..

Your not the only one smoke. I'm on my 3rd DX and all of them had/have the volume issue. The is the main thing I'm wanting from froyo. Why the heck MOTO has to package all these fixes in one release is beyond me. There are sooo many of us complaining about volume why they couldn't push a simple patch out before 2.2 is insane.

all dx have the "volume issue" it is a software glitch. So if you get 1, 3 or 10 they will all have the same issue. It is fixed in 2.2.

I've had two different DXs and neither has any issue with volume. I never put my ringer volume above 50% because it's too damn loud. Now, if it's sitting on a pillow or something soft, of course you're not going to hear it since it would be covering the speaker. So there is that...as dumb as it sounds.

So if it's a software glitch then I don't know what to tell you other than it's a FACT that every DX is NOT affected by it. Or I just be a lucky guy...I mean, wow, getting the only two devices that have a nice speaker volume. Guess I gotta go play the lottery.

They should make future phones with dual speakers. Front and back. If you think they should do this, let Moto know.

Well how loud the volume is, is pretty much subjective. one person will think it is loud enough and others will say they can hardly hear it. Motorola has already recognized it as a legitimate concern, that is why a software fix is in place for the 2.2 launch, and also why the problem was corrected with the 2.2 leak. I personally thought my ringer was fine, with 2.1 but after hearing the difference that 2.2 brings, I can see why some would be happier vs the 2.1 build even though 2.1 was fine for me, 2.2 is quite a bit louder in fact very noticeable.

just to do a test because you know you can flash it back to stock 2.1, you should put the leaked 2.2 on your droid x to see if how loud it goes is more in line with what you are expecting. I dont think it will be any louder then it is on the 2.2 leak so you will know if that is loud enough for you.
