Just read this article which had a lot of phones tested and compared. If both phones have the same GPU but EVO has a more powerful CPU how can the Optimus One series score higher on the GPU end?

In these other two benchmarks our Optimus One series didn't make the cut. ;)

Simple, the Adreno 200 GPU was designed when 320x480 was a popular screen resolution. When Evo came out, Adreno 200 was what was available, but they were instead using an 800x480 screen resolution. Adreno 200 is underpowered for that amount of pixels so it suffers in OpenGL benchmarks.

You see a similar pattern with iPhone 4 performing worse on 3d benchmarks than iPhone 3GS. It is the higher screen resolution coupled with a GPU that wasn't really designed to handle that many pixels.
