Question Opening Some Apps Shuts Phone Down

My Doogee N50 Pro, keeps shutting down when I open some apps.
This phone claims to be 256GB storage, with (I believe) 8GB RAM which claims to expand to a virtual 12GB.
I was using the the full 12GB Ram, but brought it down to 4G and planning to move it up to 8GB after this is posted.

I have used 81GB of storage and 36GB is in apps.
I've just noticed that all my music files seem to still be on my device storage, even though their supposed to have been moved to my SD Card which is 126GB which has 26GB of MP3 files, but phone storage says 21GB

I use my phone for personal and for work as my only point of access.

I mentioned I have 36GB of apps, some 240 apps, but when I open some apps, my phone shuts down, followed by a restart.
Apps like the Microsoft Authenticator, PayPal and the latest Stellariuam, but it's only a few apps that are shutting the phone down.
(Am going to make a list)

With the info I've given, could anyone explain why my phone shuts down when opening these, even when I've closed all other background working app?

Does your phone give you the option to format the SD card as Internal Storage (aka Adoptable Storage) vs Portable Storage? If so, that can be a bit dicey, since SD cards can be pretty unreliable, depending on their quality. So if the system is utilizing a bad SD card for important app processes, that could potentially lead to system crashes.

Doogee is maybe a step or two above the no-name/off-brand direct-from-China devices that are unreliable (and often lie through their teeth about their specs). From what I've seen online from YouTubers like SMOOREZ (who likes to get these kinds of cheap devices and run them through their paces), at least Doogee tends not to lie about their specs. But the other thing to keep in mind that these companies will also have much less quality control, both for hardware and software, and intermittent crashes could be due to glitches in either realm.

Thanks for your reply B.D
No, I haven't used the SD for extra Ram memory, this is built in the phone spec as an option that offers that facility.

It's definitely a glitchy device, as I bought two, the other for my half and I had to return it, and in fact I got her a Sam, reset hers to factory (or one of them), but I've had to reset both in the end and kept one on needing a device.

Sometimes, it acts like its overheating, losing brightness and jumping across the interface.

I think I placed a screen protector on them and cover and at these times, I get a bit more control when I take the cover off, but it's not overheated.

FYI, Adoptable Storage is where the SD card is formatted to be regarded as part of the phone's Internal Storage, not RAM. I'm aware of the virtual RAM feature you were referring to, but that's a separate thing. So you can confirm that the card is acting as Portable Storage rather than Internal Storage?

Sorry B.D, I was half asleep when I replied.
It's set to portable, as I got quite a few MP3 files, I want to keep them off the phone storage.

Ok, got it. I recall hearing about some instances where corrupt data on a card could lead to crashes, so see what happens if you unmount the card and remove it. Does the phone still crash?
I'll try that and see if I can scan it as well.
I will let you know if there are any changes.

I nearly forgot to mention.
Just last week I was able to open and use the MS Teams, which I used to make sure my girlfriend was able to chat with her uni on her MAC, then yesterday morning it shut down on me when I tried to connect to a work teams meeting.

Hi BD
I just tried checking the problem on the phone by taking the SD Card out, uninstalled and re-installed MS Teams.
Tried the app without the permissions and with and it has made no difference.
I even tried installing DrFone to see if it can help, but it only half way finds the phone.

Win 10 repair tools to repair what, the phone? Sorry, but I don't know of any legit ones. DrFone has always been on the shady side (along with Wondershare and some others), so I wouldn't really trust any of them.

With all that you've tried unsuccessfully, I'm suspecting more that this is due to a buggy phone. You may need to consider switching to a phone from a more reputable manufacturer.

Yes, DrFone is a layered app and when you try to unistall, it claim I still their product opened.
Had to use an app remover.
Apps that I should say, reboots the phone, still continue to do so, charge or non-chraging.

There were only a few things that I didn't see in your testing.

What happens in Safe Mode? I guess this plays if you're able to recreate this issue reliably. Opening the app while the phone is in Safe Mode might help us identify this as an issue with the individual apps or the phone, or some other app installed on the phone. So if you go into SM, open the app and nothing happens this can point to a different app, but if it still shuts down this can point to the phone or the app. I'm leaning towards it being the phone since it would be odd that multiple apps would suffer all at the same time.

It also doesn't look like you've tried clearing the partition cache. After an update things can get caught in the partition cache and create bugs. This seems like a good candidate for this because it affects the performance of the phone and multiple apps. If it were just one or two apps it could be something like this but this is more likely when it affects more than just one thing. The steps to clear your cache are;

To clear the cache partition on a Doogee N50 Pro, you can use the device's recovery mode. [1, 2]
Steps [1]

  1. Turn off the device
  2. Press and hold the Power and Volume Up keys simultaneously
  3. Release both keys when the device turns on and the logo appears
  4. Use the Volume keys to highlight wipe cache partition
  5. Press the Power key
  6. If prompted, use the Volume and Power keys to confirm your selection
Wiping the cache partition removes existing cached data, but it doesn't affect personal data. The cache partition stores some app data to improve access to apps. [3]
