Optimus comes on in my pocket

Is there a way to configure the physical "lock" button on the top of the Optimus? You have to hold it down for a while in order to shut off the phone, but if you just tap it, the phone will come on. I'd like to require it to be held longer just to get the phone out of standby mode.

I keep the phone in my pocket and I find that sometimes while in there, the top button gets hit and stuff happens. This morning, I was walking out of my house and heard the phone dialing somebody. Is this something that I can configure?

Thanks!

i don't believe so. you can however set a pattern unlock. that will stop it from coming on and dialing in your pocket.

This has happened to me also. Not necessarily dialing numbers while in my pocket but starting some process, like activating voice commands, typing into a text field, etc.

My normal action is to hit the button at the top to turn the screen of and put it in my pocket. Even if one of the physical buttons get pressed while in my pocket, how does the unlock slider get moved to the correct spot to unlock the phone and then start doing stuff? Doesn't the screen require the touch of the skin on your finger to react? I have tried to work the screen with a piece of tissue paper wrapped around my finger and it doesn't react. I have tried to work the screen with the plastic stylus from my Palm 800W, and it doesn't react. I rub the screen on my shirt in many directions, it doesn't react.

Any thoughts on this?

actually it isn't that hard. the fabric in your pocket may be thin enough to make the screen think your leg is touching the screen. the screen does need skin as contact to do anything, so things like stylus' won't work. however if you take a dime (any change will do i think) and use that, you'll see the screen start reporting touches. skin works best but other things do as well. if you leg comes in contact while the screen is on, it's very possible that the unlock slider can get dragged from one side to the other.

again, try the pattern unlock and see if the problems persist. also there are other lock screen apps out there that will give you other options rather than just slide to unlock.

The screen needs a capacitive change to register touch. Your finger works great for this. A sweaty pocket will conduct enough charge to do the same, (the key is the SWEAT, which is an electrolytic compound that conducts charge). An object that is charged with static electricity, (such as your pocket constantly rubbing against your leg/jeans), can also trigger a touch.

Thank you guys, I think I understand the workings of these screens better now. It's funny, when I put the phone in my pocket, I always place it so that the screen points inwards - towards my leg. Hmmm... Of course I developed this practice to protect the screen from being hit, as when I happen to lean forward and catch the edge of a table or something.

Now, I have noticed that these unintended unlocks have been happening less frequently since I started turning the scree off with the power button and waiting a few seconds before I slip it into my pocket.

Thanks,
Rob

Also you may want to make sure that your screen doesn't automatically come on when you miss a call or text. I use handcent and when I first got it my screen would just unlock when I received a text and my phone would then do all kinds of stuff in my pocket.
