Hello,

I have an LS670 and I would like to use it in "iPod Touch" mode only. WiFi only with no activation. I have it rooted and loaded with a custom recovery (Xionia).

I'd like to disable or remove the CDMA/EVDO radio so not to drain the battery.

Which ROM would be best for this purpose?

Thanks!

G

There are probably widgets that will do this, but you can go into dialer:
*#*#4636#*#* > phone information > "turn off radio"

Then enable wifi. Should work.

Little more work involved

There are more things that automatically set up listeners, such as the messaging app and anything related to telephony. I think this is the case, even when you turn the radio off in the tech menu.

Someone else might be better qualified to answer this, but the different apps that work with calls or messages that can be inbound may have never been setup to check if the radio is on, although, IMO they should have been for reasons similar to this. Even if they were setup for this, they would probably check often to see if the radio has been turned back on, which just the checking would drain the battery a bit.

If you look into what people are doing to the nook color, you may get some ideas, tweeks from there, as there are frameworks and apks that developers have modified to eliminate such battery drain.

I WOULD NOT INSTALL NOOK MODIFICATIONS ONTO YOUR OPTIMUS,

just get ideas from them.

Maybe try 'airplane mode'
That definitely shuts down the radio.
Dunno if that mode blocks Wi-Fi, you'll have to try and see.

Yes, that blocks Wi-Fi.

EDIT - It turns Wifi off if it is on, but can then be re-enabled.

That worked! Thanks a bunch! :D

I went ahead and loaded CM7, but it didn't have a built in toggle. Searched on the Market, but only found 2g-3g toggle. I guess GPS will have to work without the assist. If I find anything that doesn't work, I'll repost.

[update] I think that the stock ROM will do this, but I just tried it in CM7. Enter airplane mode and then go and re-enable WiFi. Done deal! Duh!

It sounds really weird, but since I took my Pre off my account, I can run airplane mode with wifi. It claims to be in AP mode, but the wifi logo comes up and I can use email, as well as all the apps I had on it. Just can't make phone calls. Havent tried it with my optimus though

I was wrong concerning WiFi and Airplane. If Wifi is on when you turn airplane mode on, it will turn off WiFi, but you can simply turn Wifi back on, and still keep cellular Data turned off.

If you flash cyanogenmod there have a list of what can/cannot be removed Barebones - CyanogenMod Wiki Also shows what is lost by removing them.

As far as removing the radio...sounds like a way to brick your phone.

You could just turn on airplane mode until you'd like to use wifi.

Couldn't you just go to phone settings (*#*#4636#*#* on dialer) and turn off the radio?

It is faster to do Airplane mode (turn off all radios, phone, wifi, bluetooth)

Then individually turn on WiFi.

Especially if you are using Quick Settings or have individual on/off widgets loaded.
