Options for free GN hotspot / tether?

Really looking forward to using the GNex as a hotspot....without paying any extra fees to VZW.
What are my options?
Will WiFi work without a subscription? (There was a simple sql hack for the bionic that accomplished this.)
Can I use the included micro USB cord to do it?
Thanks!

I'm actually fairly sure they charge $20/mo for hotspot tethering (it says so in the manual I believe?).

Hey,
I was wondering the same thing. I will be a first-time android user when I pick up the Nexus and was also really hoping for some form of free tethering, or at least a one time fee instead of monthly fees. I was under the impression that rooting or certain apps can get around the vzw fee.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

On the bionic, all you had to do was get root, get a $1.99 sql editor from the market, and then flip a single bit. Hoping to see something like that again.

I had mentioned this was free....either I was misunderstanding bates or he misunderstood the app...either way there was a misunderstanding and i passed along some wrong info

MY BAD

its not free.

It doesn't look like it's free. I know I can do it on the GSM model but doubt it on Verizon. I'm wondering how they managed to stop it. They must have something else baked into the OS. Every nexus phone I've had you could do it for free, even though the carrier charged for it.

Well it will be free one way or the other. I am sure some members will come on here saying "that's against your agreement, Verizon is gonna get you" I say screw Verizon, root it and tether away.

I'm coming from a blackberry and I use the 'tether' app by tether.com. Its a one-time fee of $50 but every few months crackberry would have it for 50% off. They also have an android version, has anyone seen this discounted?

here's how you do tethering:

1. root
2. search wifi tether on google
3. click the first link (should be a code.google.com link)
4. install it
5. ????
6. profit

Also, if you don't care about wifi or don't want to root, just grab PDAnet from junefabrics

SIDENOTE: you sill have to side load both of these

Sorry, what do you mean by side load? Do you mean have an app running on the PC/Mac as well?

The only thing I've noticed about PDANet is that anytime I use the Bluetooth DUN it literally fries my Charge - battery burns up, phone slows to a crawl and takes that internet connection I was looking for along with it. Does anybody else have this problem or is it just me?

The hot spot on the GSM nexus ia free. The verizon nexus charges for hot spot... but i am sure in a week we will have a free option for the verizon nexus from our killer developer community

Sideload means the app isn't in the android market; you have to load the app package (.apk) directly on your device and install it from there.

The only limitation with the tether app is that it only does one device. You can do wireless via bluetooth, but you cant act as a hotspot.

Wireless tether for root users and Barnacle are both currently not working on my rooted VZW Nexus.

Anyone gotten one to work?
