Oreo first impressions

I don't like the icons. Harder to see if on or off. hard to read. Preferred the round icons instead of the new square ones. I am not especially resistant to change either.

I struggled at first to swipe to close a minimized window.

What launcher are you using? I am using the Pixel launcher on a Pixel XL running 8.1 beta and I can change the shape of the icons using the home page settings.
