OTA .890 Problem

So, I noticed pretty much everybody has went with the OTA update. I have tried to do so myself but my phone just tells me that "Check for update is not available at this time. Try again later."
Every time I check this I get the same message. Does anybody know if this is an issue with my phone or are others getting the same result? I really don't want to call in to Verizon and try fixing it if I can avoid it.
Also, can anybody tell me if the update is really worth it? Any comments or information would be helpful, thanks in advance.

I had to backup and hard reset my phone in order to get the OTA update. I kept getting the same not available message.

Well I tried the back up and hard reset but no luck. Had to call in an issue with another phone and asked the rep if he knew about the OTA update, he told me it is only going out in waves and I will get an automatic notification when it is available for my phone. Seems odd to me but this is my first Android device so...
My question is now this: What are the pros and cons of the update?

Well, I can't prove this or not sure if there is any logic to this, if you have any apps that are pending updates in the market I'd suggest you download them. That might get the OTA to you. Worth a try. Good luck.

You usually get that message when your trying to do an OTA on a rooted phoned.

The other alternative is you backup as much info as possible to your SD card, factory reset and try pulling the OTA. If that doesn't work. Remove root, hard reset and try it from setting/about phone/update again.

However, if you are rooted then you should be getting the message that "Check for update is not available at this time" What it should say if there is no update is "No update required, your phone is up to date"

So if you really hard reset and it still doesn't work. Check out my post on how to manual update http://forums.androidcentral.com/droid-3-rooting-roms-hacks/105404-rooting-droid-3-a-2.html#post1325165. It will say the update is called 5.5.959 but it really updates your phone to 5.6.890. I've done this and re-rooted with Pete's Tools and haven't had a problem. The process is quite simple.

I tried the advice samdroid gave and he was right I did have pending updates to the bloatware Verizon put on the phone. I updated all with the exception being Google Search. Which somehow is listed under "Not installed" in the "My Apps" section of Market. It is not letting me update it either, the only option that it has is to open it. Sort of an odd option considering how they have it listed.

In response to Masheen: I do not have my D3 rooted and was not planning to out of first timer fear. Is the factory reset going to cause any major problems if I go that route? I have heard horror stories of factory resets gone bad on other OS devices.

Even though it has been a long time since this thread was active, I just wanted to post what the final solution was. After many, many attempts at acquiring the update, I finally caved and called Verizon. I spent close to an hour on the phone before getting someone that could help. She tried a few things and we ended up doing a factory reset. Apparently I had an app that was blocking the OTA. Anyhow, this thread is done now. Thanks to those who offered suggestions.
