Is anybody working on rooting the OTA GB on the X? I need my root back. I really dont want to SBF...yet.

You would be my hero...

I can't believe the OTA has been out this long without root, but I'm sure we'll see it soon.

doubt u will see it since .596 has root already just not ota. version

Currently there are no known exploits for GingerBread google has done a good job securing it, at least that is what i understand.

Yeah, from everything I've heard, we shouldn't be expecting to be able to root Gingerbread on our own -- at least, not with a one-click solution.

I guess you haven't heard of "Gingerbreak" then? It works on other phone's version of Gingerbread. Just not, apparently, the OTA version on the DX.

Personally, I was afraid of this once Gingerbreak was released while the DX leaks had been made available. It gave Moto and VZW time to plug the hole. Even still, for some reason, there appear to be SOME people who actually are able to get it to work on their DX's with OTA Gingerbread. Go figure.

However, while Moto can lock the bootloader (and thereby the kernel) and VZW can stop some exploits, P3Droid was still able to root what is supposed to be the OTA version of Gingerbread for the DX. Assuming that it isn't the OTA programs on top of a leaked kernel (say that of .595), then there is a method. Obviously a manual method, but a method, nonetheless.

Hey, I understand P3Droid has spent a ton of time learning about and preparing his rooted versions (standard OTA, odexed, and deodexed) and I respect that and possibly his desire to protect his knowledge. But in the last month I've spent at least 15-20 hours on clean installs/resetup of Froyo and Gingerbread. One time to reload Froyo because it was starting to behave oddly (probably because of a misbehaved root app). One time to get a leaked version of Gingerbread loaded (.588, rooted, of course). And, finally, so that I could be part of the Moto "soak" group (SBF OTA Froyo and then allow the upgrade to push through).

Needless to say, spending another 5-8 hours backing up, SBFing back to OTA Froyo, installing the rooted Gingerbread, and then reinstalling ALL of my apps/restoring them, AGAIN, is not on the top of my "bucket list".

If I have to do all of that, I might as well wait for the rumored port of CM7 for the DX (the CM7 stuff on top of the rooted .596 kernel). I'm running CM7 on one of my B&N Nook Colors and it is very, VERY nice! Of course, it is running its own "CM7'd" kernel. Smooth as room temperature butter and posts Quadrant scores withing 10-15% of my DX on OTA Gingerbread.

Hey, I'd be happy to be able to load CM7 off a SD card, if that was what it took.

Anyway, time to get off my soapbox. :p (Yeah, I can hear the cheering now... :) ) I guess I'm a bit frustrated because I have some apps that I spent quite a bit of time tweaking and I can't restore them until I get root and then use Titanium to get everything back again.

Then again, patience isn't my strong suit. :D

I don't know, there is a way to get a rooted version of the OTA, and it's pretty simple. The idea of an app that can root on your behalf is more than a little scary. Z4Root for Froyo was nice and easy, but there's nothing at all to prevent someone from using the same exploit and rooting your phone without your knowledge (in fact, they already have). The fact that I need to go out of my way and perform multiple (albeit simple) steps to get rooted Gingerbread on my phone gives me a little more piece of mind and I'm fine with the current state of things.

I agree. It really isn't all that hard to install the TBH rooted version of the OTA. You can do it from froyo or one of the leaks.

But you need to be on the new radio so if you are on Froyo remember to update to 4.5.588 before installing 4.5.596 or you will get stuck in boot loop.

I dislike having to sbf but I am about ready to do it to get rooted. Starting to get a bit impatient. Hopefully here soon they get the OTA ginerbread root up soon.

Is anyone even working on this? I would have thought that we'd have had a root by now, especially with rooted OTA flashables floating around.

rooting OTA GB

alright so im sorry for creating this whole thread and for my noobieness but i really cant find this information. im just looking for some sort of instruction on how wipe the phone and install the stock OTA update with root. I wanted to try some of the roms also but that's for a different time. Any links with instructions for an easy root for OTA would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: rooting OTA GB
