OTA GB Root?

Re: rooting OTA GB

The document compile date is from the 14th, but that was when I installed Google Talk with Video. The OTA GB install is probably from notes I took about a week earlier, but as far as I know it's still the preferred method. The only thing I don't cover is how to upgrade your radio to the .12 release, but I think if you're on stock GB today that shouldn't be an issue.

Re: rooting OTA GB

Gb is unrootable. SBF back to froyo and install the two part rooted gingerbread zip.

Re: rooting OTA GB

Somebody always says this...then someone smarter figures out how to do it. I just wish they would hurry up.

At the moment their is no known gingerbread exploit that can be used to attain root, google has done a good job fixing previous security vulnerabilities.

Re: rooting OTA GB

The thing is, I'm not sure if anyone *is* working on it. You can get a rooted "stock" system today with minimal headache, and a z4root-like app would be exploiting a pretty serious bug in the Android OS (one that blackhats have already learned to use for malware on Froyo). And this is not just a "there's a misprint in this menu item five levels deep" but a real security hole which will probably mean they'll need to start from scratch for the next OTA release when said hole is patched. If I were in the Android hacking elite circle I would say what we've got is enough rather than risk a new release with yet another rooting patch I now need to work around.

But you need to be on the new radio so if you are on Froyo remember to update to 4.5.588 before installing 4.5.596 or you will get stuck in boot loop.

Are you sure this is this right? Why would someone going from Froyo to the rooted .596 have to do .588 first if the people who got OTA .596 didn't have to? Aren't they the exact same except the rooted version has the root files slipped in?

You may want to read the developers instructions at Official DX Gingerbread 2.3.3 (4.5.596) Release Thread - Something for everyone because I have seen a number of bootloops that was reported because the developers instructions wasn't followed exactly...

UPGRADE PATHS

Method One
The first method to upgrade to gingerbread from froyo is to sbf you phone back to stock froyo (2.3.340) and await for the upgrade OTA. (BAD IDEA)

Method Two
The second method to upgrade to gingerbread from froyo is to sbf you phone back to stock froyo (2.3.340) and use the 2 install files from below. This Method Isn't Deodexed

Method Three
The third method is for anyone currently running a Gingerbread leak (588/591/595). You can just install the appropriate zip right over the top of your previous build. Complete Deodexed..
