OTA update when Sprint Nexy is released?

First off guys - I'm surprised there's not still the "where's my update" threads on the first page. I haven't been on here much lately and I'm wondering if I missed something. I can't imagine people just became tired of asking :p My sexy nexy works wonderfully as it should (and I travel for business) so I haven't HAD to root, although I'm awfully curious to try it out for the heck of it and/or to see if I notice improvements where I didn't think my nexus was lacking. Anyway, what's the lastest scoop on the next OTA update? Think Google is waiting for Sprint's version to come out or something?

No reason to turn this into a "google promised me updates and haven't" thread. They didn't. I do expect the nexus to get the next few major updates, which is a major reason I bought it. Too soon to see if I was fooled, obviously. That only matters for OTA updates though anyway as I hear the dev community for the nexus is clearly second to none. So I'm good. If I don't drink "too much" during the Flyers game I may try WugFresh's easy root afterwards. Been meaning to do it for ages. Go Flyers!

I flashed 4.0.4 the minute it was leaked. Fixed the issues I had with my phone (i.e random reboots). I decided to go with a Nexus device after reading so many threads about it being pure android. My previous(first) android phone was the OG Droid and it's a great difference. I don't really care whether they promised me updates right away or what not. OTA updates improving things in the device are always welcome...but I can patiently wait for that :D

Needless to say, I'm very happy with my Sexy Nexy working flawlessly

I feel like we should get an OTA to either 4.0.4 or 4.0.5 in the next couple weeks, just guessing though

Ok, so still nothing "official." Guess it's time to pop sexy nexy's root cherry lol. I've never been known for my patience anyway. Kind of wish I had a rooted android buddy to walk me through it (probably do and don't know it...not exactly a hot topic at my age/group of friends), but from reading Wug's thread with his tool it should be a cinch. Again, I don't have any issues, but technically the nexus line was made to be rooted and messed with anyway. I'm sure I'll be blowing up the rooted section with noob questions:p

Too bad you didn't do it sooner cos you will lose everything, your sd card included when you unlock the bootloader. Make sure you backup your virtual sd card to your comp before doing anything.

About 2 weeks back someone claiming to work for Verizon told us that the update was now penciled in (my words not his) for early may, he then later uploaded a screenshot of the Verizon internal forums (supposedly) of the post that stated this. Take that how u wish but either way I wouldn't hold my breath.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

No one has been doing many "where is the update" threads since the "uber cool geeks" have been calling them "trolls" for not having rooted.

Sure wouldn't be too surprised if the Sprint version is waiting for the same thing as us.

Bottom line for me... battery life sucks but the boat anchor from Sedio keeps me running all day so as soon as I can nail down dependable data then I am GTG.

Hey Davey - would you please elaborate on any extra precautions I should take to back up my device? I didn't get around to using Wug's Root Toolkit last night, but I think I'll at least download the program and backup my device on my PC tonight. Is there any app I should get prior to help? I "remember" reading of one, Titanium Backup, I believe. Also, fortunately I don't really have a lot of stuff on my phone. Just don't want to have to reinstall "all" of my apps. Otherwise I just have pictures which I will drag and drop onto my PC. I stream everything else and/or use the cloud. I was just going to follow these steps from Wug's:

* Factory resting means that, ALL your user app settings and files will be erased.
* So... please take the steps necessary to preserver your important data.
o I recommend backing up all your picture, music files, and such manually by just:
+ Plugging your device into your computer and using drag and drop to copy them over
o Then use the backup feature of the toolkit to make a full backup of your apps and settings
+ See "backup and restore"

Initiate a backup of all your apps and app data

* User will be prompted to enter a password on there device to protect their backup file
* Once the backup is complete it will be stored on the users computer in the directory:
o And the file name will automatically be generated as the date and time the backup was made
* Note: this does not backup all of your SDcards contents: So its up to the end-user to backup any picture or music files they have.
o This only backs up apps + app data
* The user is given the option to backup system apps as well

Appreciate your help. Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything or oversimplifying this process. Does restore make my phone exactly like it was before unlocking and rooting? I am under the impression it does...
Thanks again and to anyone else.

@ConTejas

Not sure what you run at home for a computer but if you got Windows, there is one option for you...

[BETA] Backup Wonder Machine (no root, ICS only)

This will allow you to backup your device.. Data/Apps/Settings, etc... install the leak, root, whatever you choose to do then you can spin around and restore your stuff back onto your device.

It takes longer to perform than how we normally do back ups when rooted and using CWM "Nandroid Backups" but the point here is the extra time it takes to make the backup and restore it is worth it in the long run rather than loosing all your stuff when you unlock the bootloader.

Thanks a lot Paul I appreciate that. I'm still running XP on my personal PC and laptop. Will definitely use that to backup before using a root toolkit. Looks like I'll just have to download the.NET 4 framework (whatever that is lol). Can I ask you opinion on which root toolkit is better for a complete noob? I think WugFresh's kit looks nicer versus the MS DOS appearance of MSKIP's kit, but it looks like MSKIP's kit has more options built in. What do you (or anyone else) think?

MSKIP's

I've used Wug's for relocking/unrooting and it's a great tool.

Instead of going into a long winded spiel :) hit up the rooting section and read up the stickies there. CyberWarrior has written up a couple of comprehensive nuts and bolts walk throughs of rooting, unlocking, backing up etc. He explains struff way better than I could ever dream of. ((:)))

Aww c'mon - I've read most of the stickies. Just wanted a short winded "make absolutely sure you do or don't do this" and/or extra personal tips:p That said, I totally understand. Fortunately it's a slow day in the office (hangs head and heads back to the root section like a good root noob)

Check my guide, it'll get you thoroughly acquainted with the concepts you'll need for our phone ;).

See below. :D

Thanks man. As many times as I've seen you post, I've never notice that link. Good info in there and also a pretty humorous read. I have to say for as much as I've now read, I'm still a bit nervous about it all lol. I'm certainly a learn as I go kind of person, so I'll just take the plunge and triple check my steps. Just need to make the time at home lol.

Last question before I do some things that will likely lead to more specific questions. Once I backup my device, of which I plan to use the "back up wonder kit (no root/ICS)" and the one in Wug's tookit (is that overkill?) and I go ahead and get root access...nothing at all changes other than being granted superuser access, right? Is it worth taking screenshots off my apps and how they're organized or will they be restored as they were once reverting back to stock "nandroid"?

I really only want to flash the 4.0.4 radios to see if I notice a difference. I'm fine with everything else (and even the radios) for now.

Well if you've already unlocked, then your SDcard remains the same. Unlocking wipes EVERYTHING, so just be aware that you're going to have to go through setup again--inputting your gmail, the market restoration process, etc.

Root gives you root-level access. Superuser is an app that grants individual apps and systems permission to get that access.

I would make sure all of your files are backed up on a harddrive/computer somewhere, unlock, root, and if you want a custom rom, then do that as well. It's really not as complicated as it seems, trust me ;).
