Overly-noisy new phone

Quite simply, my new phone (Moto 5G Power 2024) won't shut up! That is, it's constantly making notification sounds and I don't know why. The problem is knowing what apps I need to turn notifications off for. The obvious thing to do is to check recent notifications by swiping down on the screen, but when I do so, for example, the one listed first is a "lock screen is redesigned" notification from three days ago! So, I'm not sure what's going on here. Bottom line, how do I seriously cut back on notifications sounds, preferably without having to go into the app settings one-by-one. Preferably, to say something like I don't want a notification sound UNLESS it's for an e-mail or text. That's really the only time I feel I need them. Thanks.

You can always turn on Do Not Disturb, and then specify what can be exceptions (i.e., which notifications, calls, messages etc. can come through). https://en-us.support.motorola.com/...Do Not Disturb.,Turn interruptions on or off .

Remember that many apps will default to sending you a bunch of notifications when you install them, so whenever installing a new app, I always check the Notification menu to see what I want to turn off.

Also, are the notification tones you're hearing somewhat unusual (i.e., different from the usual tones you hear when, for example, a text message comes in)? If so, you might be hearing the NFC tone, which can trigger if there's something with an NFC tag right near the back of the phone (often a credit card or ID card in a wallet-type case on the back of the phone). Could that be the issue?

Well, I'd rather not go to the "extreme" of permanent do-not-disturb if I don't have to. As for the sound of the notifications, well, it's a new phone so it's a bit hard to say (of course they are different from my old Samsung phone), but, no, I don't think they are any different from the text notification sound. But I'll try to pay more attention to that in the future. But,honestly, no, I don't think that's it. Just overly-aggressive apps. Thanks.

DND isn't really that extreme if, as you said specifically, you ONLY want email or text notifications. You can still set it so that anyone can call or text you, and you can select which apps can interrupt. You can also make sure alarms, media sounds, reminders, and calendar event notifications still come through.

Maybe this is a bit silly, but one thing that bothers me about DND is the lack of sound the camera makes when it takes a picture. I like to know for sure that the picture has been taken! Unlike app notifications, I can't find a way to override that. Is there one? That would make me feel better about this option.

Certainly not silly to have your phone work the way you would like. It's been a while since I had a Motorola and I could be wrong, but isn't the shutter click sound separate from the camera notification sound and able to be toggled on or off in the camera settings?

It's the same on my Pixel 7 Pro. If that's a dealbreaker for you, then you'll have to go through your apps and adjust the notifications as you prefer. Tedious, yes, but once it's done, you'll be set, and now you know to check the notification settings of any new apps you install from now on.

I don't think so, and B Diddy's comment below seems to confirm that. It's ridiculous! It's not like a shutter click is really a "disturbance" like a notification -- it's apples and oranges.

It's pretty close to a dealbreaker, yes. But then it goes back to figuring out what apps are making the noise. So let's say I hear one right now. Is there really no way to check to see exactly which one made it? If there is, I can just take them as they come and turn off the sound individually that way.

This is why I always keep my notification panel clear -- then any new notification I hear will be easy to determine when I look.
