I noticed that Face detection wasn’t being activated whenever I pulled the phone out of my trouser pocket. This seems to be related to how the phone detects its positioning and movement. Picking the phone up from a desk, it always works perfectly.
Quite by accident, I found a work around. It seems Huawei assumes you’ll store the phone upside down, with the USB port facing upwards (quite sensible, if you’ve got a headphone adapter plugged in). Storing upside down, I found Face recognition activated perfectly every time I removed the phone from my pocket.
Obviously, caveat YMMV (and there are many subtle reasons why the problem might not affect you, even if you are acting in a similar manner).
