P20 Lite Whatsapp does not sync contacts

On my new Huawei P20 lite I cannot get the contacts to appear on WhatsApp.
I have granted permission to WhatsApp to access the contact and it does not refresh. I have always the same 4 contacts appearing. I have delete and refresh the sync option and nothing helps. I have the latest app version,

Do the contacts have to be stored on the phone or they can be also on SIM card?

Any idea what might be the problem?

Only thing I can think of is where the contacts are stored. Try creating a dummy contact with the same number (that you know has a Whatsapp account) on your Google account, locally on the phone, and on the SIM card and see which one you see.
