Recently, I got a good deal on a used S8 so I bought it. I absolutely loved the S8 for the three days I had it until it was stolen.
When I contacted Rogers for my upgrade options I was offered a S8 for $99.00 or a P20 for $199.00. I knew nothing about the P20 but after a quick check of the reviews I decided to go with it as it seemed like a newer better phone.
After setting it all up today and using it for a couple of hours I'm not seeing any advantages to it over the S8. In fact, it's heavier, the screen display doesn't seems as nice, no wireless charging, and it's not water proof.
Is there something about this phone I'm missing that sets it apart from the S8?

I'd have chosen the S8 over the P20 personally. The camera is better on the P20 but the S8 has way more features. Had it been the P20 Pro though then I'd have got that over the S8. Unbelievably good cameras and it's waterproof and a better display too

Better cameras, faster charging, better battery life, better long term performance, faster fingerprint sensor, better speaker, PC mode without the need for a dock, IR blaster.

I just want to confirm I'm referring to the standard P20 not the Pro.
I don't believe the P20 has a IR blaster.

S8 is not water proof it's water resistant P20/Pro is also water resistant difference is it's ip67 compared to ip68. P20 is a better value just the memory storage alone is better comes with 128gb :) while everyone is still pushing only 64gb which is ridiculous. I've had the s8+ for almost a full yr I like the phone however it didn't have the dual camera that the S9 have. Had Samsung put 128gb on the S9 I would have considered staying with Samsung but they went the cheap way once again. The S9/S9 + is not a huge difference from S8/8+ just a software and cpu bump. I grew past the whole "does it have a micro sd slot" to be honest 128gb is plenty there's really no need for microsd card. Also while I had my S8+ i had a 64gb micro sd card (Samsung brand) Let me tell you it was a pain it will work for months than all of a sudden I get pop message about my card needs to transfer files blah blah and then there are times it will say the card ejected and failed I got feed up. I basically removed it. So when Huawei P20/P20 offer 128gb it was no brainer. On top of that Pro comes with 6gb ram. Although they're still using the older processor I still found it faster and smoother than my S8+. I wish Huawei came out with a faster processor/bluetooth 5.0 instead of 4.2. They cheap out there. Wireless I had wireless for my S8+ honestly I don't care for it, it's just convenience but also sacrifice takes way to long to charge I rather just plug it in to charge so much faster. But if you're talking about the camera my only beef with Huawei is their portrait mode needs some work I read their new update resolved that issue still waiting for their updates hopefully it'll improve. But for me the real bonus it offers so much as far as the camera goes the night shots looks incredible also it has abundance of filter like light trail, water silk etc.. that can be done on this phone without a tripod. No mobile phone can do that. That alone sold me so what it comes down in the end what's more important to you cause at the end of the day all phones does the same thing. But there's always one phone that will do a better job than others so that's where you need to decide what's better for you and how you want to use it.

Rechecked you're right it doesn't but another thing to consider is the Kirin 970 has better overall performance compared to the chips used in the S8, esp. when it comes to AI tasks. 970 is faster than 835 to begin with and the S8 is one of if not the slowest flagship(s) with 835. Samsungs with SD chipsets always seem to be slower than other OEMs using the same chipset for whatever reason.
